Not sure Bev but I think you will find that during Wartime a lot of the sailors hats had HM Destroyers, HM Submarines etc meaning they were posted to destroyers or submarines. Not necessarily that there were ships of those names which as far as I know there weren't. The Same with the Marines men serving with the marines would have HM Marines on their hats. The name of their ship would not have been on the hatband. I think that is the case, if not somebody with more sea knowledge will correct me I'm sure. I have seen lots of war time sailors photos and most just have HMS on the hat band. The Listowner lurches from his slumbers yet again - twice in a year! Psst! Careless talk costs lives..... The names of ships on hat-bands were a give-away to any spies lurking around sea-ports and dock-yards, so "their Lordships" in the Admiralty together with the Ministry for War, decided it would be prudent to remove the ship's name and replace it with something more generic. At least this way the amassing of seamen would not reveal which specific ships were about to sail and hence alert the enemy.
