    3. Hi everyone, Well that did not take long! My wife and I went shopping for a couple of hours, and my question was answered by several people (some for some reason with duplicate messages.) Anyway, many thanks to you all for your replies, including Jean in Hampshire who even sent me all the information I was looking for. By the way, the person who's death certificate I received was my great grand uncle, Charles Frederick GARDINER, age 31, born Fareham, Hants. He apparently never married, and was a banker's clerk, and met a strange death at the Sussex County Hospital. He died, according to the death certificate, of 'Stricture of the urethra, alcoholism, and pyaemia (septicaemia).' I guess the alcohol at least killed some of the pain he must have suffered. His brother notified the register office of his death, but for some reason said he was his uncle! Must have been embarrassed by the 'alcoholism' bit! The GARDINER family were a queer bunch, I cannot find neither birth or baptism records for any of them, The mother; Mary, and presumably the father; John, came from Leicester. The first three children were all born there between 1830 and 1833. One of them was my great grandmother. Three other children were then born in; Lambeth, Gosport, and Fareham. The father; John, was an agent for the London & South Western Railway, the eldest son also worked for the railway, and became the Station Master at Basingstoke in 1871, then Superintendent at Battersea. The second son also worked for the London & South Western, and ended up as an accountant for them at Bath. In the same batch of mail was a letter about the London and Paris Hotel in Newhaven. Apparently the hotel belonged to the the same railway! Amazing what you discover on the Lists! I'm still hoping someone will have the 1851 census of Fareham, or an index. That should give me the father's place of birth and tell me what he was doing at that time. Have not been able to find a birth registration for Charles as yet. I bet they never registered him! Regards to you all from Quebec, dull overcast and rain forecast for the week-end. Dave.
