    2. Would like some help trying to find a missing ancestor and solving a mystery. John GALLIENNE b abt 1862 Alverstoke to Thomas Henry GALLIENNE & Ellen (nee RILEY) I have after tracking him down on an 1871 Census living with his Grandmother Mary Burgess nee Riley nee unknown maiden name and his sister Ellen Mary. Why it was difficult was there were a few transcription errors e.go born in Germany, parish of Alverstoke and his sister listed as a grandson. I know the history of his sister who was an idiot from birth and ended up in the workhouse and eventually Knowle hospital where she died. But was John also living there because there was something wrong with him also. I cannot find any trace of him or his grandmother after that perhaps she died 1882. Also strange is in this census he is listed as being born Guernsey on the image ( hence the transcribing as Germany), when in fact his parents were married in Alverstoke 1860. I know that his father was born in Guernsey but I can't see them going back there just to have a baby. Perhaps another error. Any help would be really welcome. Kind regards Bob Newell

    2. Please note an error in this it was not the Grandmother who died 1882 but Ellen Mary in Knowle. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bob.newell@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 3:49 PM Subject: [ENG-HANTS] John GALLIENNE > Would like some help trying to find a missing ancestor and solving a > mystery. 3. One thought, about the comment 'going back there just to have a baby'. I would guess the marriage was in Alverstoke in 1860 because that was where the bride's family lived. Where they would live subsequently would be where the groom worked. I can't see offhand why that could not be Guernsey, especially if the groom had family connections there. Of course, if you have that 1862 birth cert saying Alverstoke there's nothing more to be said, and I apologise for sticking my oar in!
