Dear Dot, The Gurd and Jurd families peacefully coexist at present in Botley, Eastleigh, Shirley, and Southampton (and separately in innumerable other Hampshire places, too). Jurd first appeared in Suffolk in 1275, as Jorde in Norfolk 1210, Jurde in Huntingdonshire 1209 and Worcestershire 1275. Said to be a pet form of Jordan, which became popular under the Normans (from at least 1200) whose Crusaders brought home flasks of Jordan water to be used at baptisms. The best place to get Censuses on CD is Archive CD at www.archivecdbooks.org/ (there are other sources but they're nowhere near as good quality) - however I think the nearest at present for Hampshire is the 1841 or 1861, which I have. Check Rod Neep's site for plans to issue 1851 - I wouldn't bother buying it from elsewhere. Regards, David

The first Gurd I've found was Adam in the late 13th Century renting land from Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, but living in Hatherop, Gloucestershire. The census takers obviously got mixed up with the two spellings, as we have this family I believe this is the marriage Marriages Mar 1849 Davies Jane S. Hi David Would you mind doing a look up for me on the 1841 census for JAMES WHITE and his parents THOMAS & MARY WHITE. I believe that Thomas was a postman and living in Fordingbridge or maybe be Minstead. James would have been about 15 on the 1841 census. I would also appreciate any other family members that appear on the census with his parents and any details would be more than greatfully accepted. Owing to the name White it has been very hardto get any trace on this family for me. Thank you very much for your time it is greatly apprecited.
