Dear Jenny, could your William be a highly successful professional? I quote from a 1841 London Commercial Directory: MACKIE, William, stockbroker, 4 Hercules Court, Threadneedle Street, EC2 (the court was named from the tavern on the corner where they conducted business) MACKIE, William, surveyor, 2 Charlotte Street, Blackfriars Road, SE 1 (gone, probably demolished when the 'new' bridge was built in 1860, Blackfriars Road is now its southern approach) Regards, David
