I don't know if this is your James Henry Groves but it's the closest I could get to a match. There were no James or James Henrys in 1861 that matched the details you gave . This one however is possible but is living with a step father. That may not rule him out as several of my ancestors gave their father's names on marriage certificates when the fathers had been dead for years. In the 1861 Census the Isle of Wight came under Hampshire 1861 Census Whippingham, Hampshire 21 Alfred Street Jeremiah Jacobs; Head; 45; b. Chale, Hants Mary A Jacobs; Wife; 38; b. He could have died when Mary was pregnant and in the Census Eliza might have nearing her 7th Birthday Deaths Jun 1854 Groves John I of Wight 2b 307 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Here is Mary Ann's second marriage Marriages Dec 1858 Groves Mary Ann I.Wight 2b 884 JACOBS Jeremiah I.Wight 2b 884 ---------------------------------------------------------- I looked for John Groves Marriage and came up with this one but at the moment only his name is showing. If you try again in a week or two then you might find his bride Marriages Mar 1843 GROVES John Isle of Wight 8 339 Unfortunately the IGI doesn't have this marriage. Maybe now you have this information someone will be able to look John and his family up in the 1851 Census. With luck you'll find he was a shipwright. It looks as though James henry followed the trade of his step father. Good luck Dot Salisbury, Wilts
Hello Dot, Thank you so very much, I think it maybe my James Henry Groves in the 1861 census. As when James Henry Groves married Elizabeth Switzer one of the witnesses to their marriage was a Eliza Groves. It is just that for so long now I have thought that James Henry Groves known as Henry was the son of John Groves and Jane ? her maiden name could have been Young. I think I will be sending for James Henry Groves birth certificate now. So a big thank you for your help, I will also see if someone I know could look up the 1851 census for me to see if there is a John Groves Shipwright.
