    3. On a 1883 birth certificate the mother was single so no father is listed. If I can find a parish baptism will it list the fathers name ? Thanks Rose

    3. Rose: I've had a number of illegitimate births on my line and in all instances the father was not shown on the baptism entry. 3. Rose, It is unlikely to mention the father's name unless perhaps they were an acknowledged "couple" who were about to be married. In earlier times, occasionally the parish clerk would include the name of the "reputed" father, but certainly not in most cases. Occasionally the father's surname was given as a middle name which can be a clue to possible parentage in a small community. 2. Hello Rose. You're unlikely to find the father's name on the baptism register, although does happen occasionally. Other single mothers have managed to get around the problem by giving the father's surnames as a middle name for the child. You could try looking for Bastardy Orders on the A2A site. I found a list of them for the village I'm studying. I'm not sure whether they were still in use as late as 1883 but it's worth a try. I discovered that even though I couldn't find them by searching for them by name, when I search for the village name I get a long list and they are featured on it. Hope this helps Dot on 29/9/05 10:45 pm, Opiekan at opiekan@iprimus.com.au wrote: > On a 1883 birth certificate the mother was single so no father is listed.
