Dear Rose I have followed the fruitless search for this place with interest, and am sorry you appear to have given up. Maybe as someone says you will never know, but a few questions really needed to be asked first, and possible other avenues explored. At 11:46 07/09/2005, you wrote: >I have a relative who lists Kingswood Hampshire as place of birth. >Parents married in Romsey. Could someone please advise location. >Thanks, >Rose >============================== Under what circumstances, or in what source document, is this birthplace noted?. If in a census, where was the census taken when this birthplace was cited? Are you reading the original document, or quoting from a transcription? If the person was child, where were other children born? What was the father's occupation, could his job have involved moving around the county? What year are we talking about? As someone has indicated, place names do tend to change over the centuries. Someone else mentioned 'this address', but surely it is not an address, but a birthplace. If cited in a census return, the precision of such place names tends to vary with the distance from where the person happened to be for the census. For instance, if the census was taken in the north of England, or say London, the place name such as Romsey might be sufficient, as the enumerator might never have heard of small places nearby. On the other hand if the census was taken near the birthplace, a more detailed place name is often given. This might be a parish, or a hamlet within a parish, or even the name of a farm with a small cluster of cottages around it. What I have never seen is any attempt at stating a detailed address, ie house name or number and street, so I would think such interpretations would be wrong. Having said all that, I found this business address that sounds worth pursuing: Millers Antiques Ltd. Kingswood Hampshire BH24 1DR ==================== This post code turns out to be in Christchurch Road, Ringwood ! On with the search - maybe! Cheers, Dave Jacobs ========================

Rose I have checked the original image of the 1901 census and think it has been mis-transcribed. I would read place of birth as Ringwood, Hants.
