    3. It might be worth considering that some parishes, whilst depositing their registers at the County Record Office, still keep an informal register of burials in order to keep track of the graves in their churchyard. I know that North Baddesley does this. 3. True Sandra, quite a few of the churches we have visited do this for that reason, Old Alresford, Itchen Abbas, to name just two. We have found the clergy there to be very helpful indeed and have gone out of their way to help us find burials and even marriages. 3. Hi List Another point worth considering is that for churchyards, there was no formal obligation to keep a record of grave locations. Of course the local church people, especially the sexton, would keep such a record, but possibly only in the sexton's head (and of course as gravestones) but such records have almost never been deposited anywhere. Cemeteries on the other hand, managed by local civil authorities, have always had a legal duty to keep such records, and make the location of graves known to interested parties. Church burial registers unfortunately do not note where the grave was. So who you need to contact depends on what information you are seeking. Cheers, Dave Jacobs =============== At 00:57 25/08/2005, Sandra J Smith wrote: >It might be worth considering that some parishes, whilst depositing their >registers at the County Record Office, still keep an informal register of >burials in order to keep track of the graves in their churchyard.
