Hi List This reminds me of the time I was looking up a baptism for an antipodean correspondent, and found her ancestor's entry on the same page as that of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, son of Mark Brunel (who built the world's first powered production line in Portsmouth Dockyard, for making pulley blocks). When I proudly reported this to my correspondent, I got the bemused reply 'Who's Isambard Kngdom Brunel?' Cheers, Dave Jacobs ================ At 15:47 23/08/2005, you wrote: >Hi Chris, Thanks for the memorial. Hi List, Wasn't the father involved in building the London Victorian sewers at this time? Or have I remembered the wrong person? I remember seeing a very interesting TV program on the subject some time ago, but a senior moment has deprived me of the name:-) Sandra Edna & Ken wrote: >Looks like the famous builder of Clifton Suspension Bridge, Temple Meads >Station in Bristol, etc. > >Edna - Ottawa > > >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Linda Hardy" <LindaAnnHardy@bigpond.com> >To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 8:38 AM >Subject: [ENG-HANTS] BRUNEL stray 1851 Census > > >1851 Census H107 1480 page 297 and 298 >17 and 18 Duke Street, St Margaret Westminster, London >Isambard BRUNEL, age 44, Civil Engineer, born Portsmouth, Hampshire >Mary Elizabeth BRUNEL, wife, age 37, born Kennington, Surrey >Lady Sophia BRUNEL, Mother, widow, age 76, Lady, born Westminster >Isambard BRUNEL, son, age 13, scholar at home, born Westminster >Henry Mark BRUNEL, son, age 8, scholar at home, born Westminster >Florence Mary BRUNEL, dau, age 3, scholar at home, born Westminster > > >Linda >Tasmania, Australia > > > >============================== >Census images 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871, plus so much more. >Ancestry.com's United Kingdom & Ireland Collection. Marc Isambard Brunel built the Thames Tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping: I think that was featured in a TV programme - I seem to remember a banquet being held in it! He also developed mechanical ships blocks (pulleys), which he installed in Portsmouth Dockyard (was that what he was doing in Portsmouth when Isambard Kingdom was born?). Hi Edna, Yes I recognised the name when I saw it, I had no idea where he was from even though I had heard of him so was quite surprised to discover this Hampshire stray.
