    3. Greetings, I am a new to the list. II have just obtained a census entry for 1891 for Farnborough. WILLIAMS Thomas - Prison - unm - 19 - Solider - b Glos, Bristol Unfortunately I do not have previous pages, and would like to find out what sort of establishment Thomas was in? One the same page are Sargeant Major's Medical Corps and their families, so take it to be either a Military Priston, or a Prison which is part of a Military Establishment. Perhaps somebody with local knowledge of Farnborough could clarify for me. Many thanks Pat in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. 3. It could be the Miltary Prison for Aldershot Camp, which is described at www.hants.gov.uk/museum/aldershot/faq/glasshouse.html Aldershot is known as "The Home of the British Army". Aldershot Camp was established in 1854, with the South Camp situated within the boundaries of Aldershot, and the North Camp situated within the boundaries of Farnborough. The article shows that the prison was bounded by North Road, Redvers Buller Roads, and James Road. The location of these can be seeeen by going to www.streetmap.co.uk and searching for Street "redvers buller road". 3. Yes this is the Military Prison, Glasshouse is also used for the Guardroom in a camp as it has cells in for prisoners. 3. I believe that the 1891 Farnborough Census would have included the military establishments in North Camp. If so it would have included "The Glasshouse" - the Military Prison. "The building of the Glasshouse started in 1870. It replaced a previous collection of huts serving as the prison. Sheldrake's Guide gives a vivid description of the 'large aggressive looking building', constructed in the area bounded on the north and south sides by North and Redvers Buller Roads, and to the west by James Road. From Sheldrake's description, the building was very similar to conventional Victorian civil prisons, such as Wormwood Scrubs. The new three-storey prison was originally designed to house 165 inmates, considerably fewer than the open huts. Each storey housed 55 prisoners with light iron galleries running around the whole building giving access to the cells. Each cell was about 12 feet long and 10 feet high with fresh air coming from the 'hopper' arrangement of the window frames. A shaft carried off the foul air off through an outlet on the roof. A form of central heating was also provided via a system of pipes from the boiler rooms in the basement and the building even had gas lighting. These relative comforts contrasted with the 12 ft high brick wall topped with shards of broken glass surrounding the prison. The wall also enclosed the governor's and warder's offices, chapel, stores, shot drill shed and the guardhouse, laundry and latrines, which were in an adjoining yard." I hope this helps.
