Andy: I don't know if you have the information already or if it's of any help to you, but there is an Alice P. Thorn age 27 on the 1891 census living in Hound, Scholing St. Mary, Hampshire with her daughter Jane M. Thorn. She is reflected as married, but no husband is living with her. Next door though is a George Thorn and his wife plus family. It shows Alice and daughter as being born in Southampton, so you might be on the right track for the individuals you found on the 1881 census.
