    3. Carolyn I have quite a few Stamps in my tree, the vast majority of whom came from Pamber, which is a few miles north of Basingstoke. I also have a few from nearby Bramley. I've got a Sarah Stamp baptised 1808, parents George Stamp and Charlotte Stroud, but nothing about her husband. Regards Ed -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Carolyn Perkes Sent: 25 June 2007 17:10 To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-HANTS] Sarah STAMP Stephen WILD(E) England to Ontario,Canada ca 1830s Hello all, This is my first posting to this list. Have not yet browsed all the archives. I am trying to establish where my ancestors Stephen WILD and Sarah STAMP were born and married in England. Since their eldest son is purported to have been born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and I see on the IGI several mentions of a marriage for a Stephen Wild in Basingstoke Hampshire in 1795, I thought I would address this list. ***************************************** This couple had four sons before leaving England and settling in Ontario [Upper Canada] near Cayuga in about 1835 (approximately, possibly a bit later). Four sons:: 1) James Wild, b. Oct 20 1825 in Basingstoke, Hampshire 2) William Wild b. March 18, 1830 or 1831 (?), in Lancashire (or Yorkshire, not certain). Married Elizabeth Sutor. 3) Thomas Wild birthdate uncertain, birthplace unknown. Married Catherine Goss 1855, North Cayuga Ontario, Canada. This couple moved to Michigan, U.S. Died 1898, Bay City Michigan. 4) George Wild b. 1831 or 1833, birthplace unknown. Married Elizabeth Love. According to the monument in the Riverside Cemetery, North Cayuga, Ontario Canada (records destroyed in a fire). Stephen WILD 1802-1885 Sarah STAMP 1802-1856 On the adjacent monument: George Wild 1831-1867 (however, George turned up in Bay City, Michigan in 1898 to attend his brother Thomas' funeral, according to an obit for Thomas). (his wife) Elizabeth Love (b. 1824 Ireland -d. 1918 Hamilton Ontario). Monument states Died Apr. 4, 1918, Age 94 years) George Wild and Elizabeth Love are my g-g grandparents. Their known children: Margaret 1860-1944; Mary (?); James, b. 1864 d. ? The 1861 Ontario Census for Haldimand County also lists a Sarah, age 4 and Margaret, age 2 with parents George and Elizabeth. The 1861 Census for Haldimand also lists a 54-year-old Stephen Wilde as a farmer (birth date would be off by 5 years), born ENG, CE and possibly his son William, labourer, age 30 along with an Elizabeth, age 26 (likely William's wife). ***************************************** Thank you for any suggestions or ideas and apologies if there is too much detail on descendants. 3. Hello Ed, Many thanks for this information. It is the first possibility I have come across for my Sarah Stamp! How likely is it for someone born in 1802 to be baptized a few years later (CoE) in that time period? Since Stephen Wild and Sarah Stamp are the earliest arrivals in Canada in my family's history, it's proving hard to trace them in England. Probably I need to dig deeper on this side of the pond for an obit of for Stephen and son William, but since Sarah is said to have died in 1856, I will have to try to search Ontario newspapers for that time period in the hope that some detail of her birthplace would be given (though often, such obits merely stated the country of birth). North Cayuga in Ontario was a tiny rural village (still is a very small place, and still is in a rural area). And since Wild(e) is not that rare a name, it's hard to pinpoint possible locations. From the familysearch.org site, it seems there are many Wild(e)s in Lancashire and Yorkshire, but so far I have not been able to find any marriage to a Stamp - - which doesn't mean none occurred, I realize. >From looking around, I see that many Stamps emigrated to Virginia in the 17th century. And I think a few wound up in Canada as Loyalists after the Revolutionary War. I am wondering how likely it would be for a young woman such as Sarah Stamp, born in Hampshire, to marry a young man from Lancashire or Yorkshire? Or for a couple orginating in Hampshire to later move north? Stephen Wild(e) was a farmer in Ontario in 1861: would he have been an "Ag labourer" in Hampshire and further north, before emigrating? Intriguing because the second son was said to have been born in Lancashire or Yorkshire. Suppose I should be looking through parish registers for marriages in and around Basingstoke and a birth for the eldest son. Thanks again, Best regards, Carolyn Eddie Thomas wrote: > Carolyn > > I have quite a few Stamps in my tree, the vast majority of whom came > from > Pamber, which is a few miles north of Basingstoke. 3. Carolyn I'm afraid I don't have any answers to your questions. However, having checked Hugh Wallis's site at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyHa mpshire.htm#P it would appear that IGI coverage for Pamber is incomplete. Nevertheless, you can borrow filmed copies of various parish records of Pamber from the LDS. Here's what they have: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?dis play=topicdetails&subject=509460&subject_disp=England%2C+Hampshire%2C+Pamber +%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 All that is, of course, assuming that Sarah originated from Pamber! That's for you to discover. However, given the prominence of the name Stamp in Pamber, I would suggest it's as good a place as any to start. As for moving from the north to the south, and vice versa, I think our ancestors were a bit more mobile than we sometimes like to think. Of course, you can get generations of the same family staying put in the tiny hamlet in which they were all born. But you also find them turning up in the most unexpected of places. I suppose the rule here is: always expect the unexpected (aka don't rule anything out). Good luck.
