Hi I have rejoined the list as I am back researching my Hampshire family, having spent some time on family members in surrounding counties. I have a problem concerning an entry on the IGI ....... Name: Sarah Ann FRANKLIN Christening: 22 December 1871 Sherfield Upon Loddon, Hampshire, England Father: David Franklin Mother: Maria Batch number C022104 I have found an entry in the BMD indexes for the December quarter of 1871 which probably relates to the birth of Sarah Ann.. My problem is as follows - Maria FRANKLIN was born in 1849 - she was oldest known child of David FRANKLIN and Patience WIX who were married on 21 January 1849 in Sherfield on Loddon. I have followed Maria through the cansus - in 1851 & 1861 she was at home with her parents in Sherfield on Loddon on census night. In 1871, she was a servant in Greywell, Hampshire. By 1881 she is married to James Woods and is living in Basingstoke, the marriage having taken place in 1877. She is still in Basingstoke in 1896, when she is shown as the informant on her father's death certificate, and in the 1901 census. Lets go back to Sarah Ann - who was baptised in 1871 ... she was obviously baseborn, but the IGI entry shows the father to be David Franklin. As far as I can tell, there are only two David Franklins in the area - Maria's father and Maria's younger brother (my great grandfather) who was born in 1863. There is a possible solution (I don't want to go there !!), but my gut reaction is that the vicar asked for 'father's name' and she, in ignorance, gave her own father's name. Have listers heard of this situation before? Also, if anyone happens to be going to the Hampshire record office, or has access to the parish records of Sherfield on Loddon in some other way - what exactly does the entry say? - has there been some form of mistranscription on the IGI site?
