Hello, I don't have access to 1830 Pigot's but I checked 1836 Fletchers Directory of Southampton on line and found: John Field, Baker, Canal Walk. You might like to look at other directories on the site: www.portcities.org.uk Select Southampton, and then follow the link to directories. The same site is very useful for photos and illustrations of old Southampton. Hi, I, too, found the site useful as the directories contained a number of references to an elusive ancestor George DYETT, hairdresser, b1812 Southampton. I also found a reference to his father, George in the 1811 directory, so many thanks Lynda for the suggestion. However, I also by chance, discovered some pictures of the Cowherds Public House together with the following description:- "This building was built in 1762 on the site of a much older building. It was the home of the cowherd, who from late medieval times was responsible for livestock kept on the Common. Only the central part of the building dates from Georgian times. Edward Dyett, Cowherd from 1774, supplemented his income by selling beer. This side of the business proved so profitable that in 1789 the building became a pub. Its official name was the Southampton Arms, but locals continued to call it the Cowherds." I'm intrigued to know more about this and would like to hear from anyone who has more details. In particular, does the pub still exist and where exactly is/was it? And is there any connection between Edward DYETT and 'my' DYETTs. Thanks, Robin. In Surrey. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lynda Ahmad Sent: 18 March 2007 12:00 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ENG-HANTS] Lookup for John FIELD in 1830 Pigots Directory Hello, I don't have access to 1830 Pigot's but I checked 1836 Fletchers Directory of Southampton on line and found: John Field, Baker, Canal Walk.
