Glad you enjoyed the website Patsy You are correct in saying they are more bulky than you imagine, some of these thatched roofs are a metre thick and a lot of reeds and work goes into doing them Incidentally a lot of websites use Rooves for the plural of roof but the correct word is Roofs! Tthe English language is confusing to say the least! I was most impressed with the thatched roofs (rooves?) - photographs don't do justice to the sheer size and bulk of these. I was surprised at just how dominant they are in relation to the houses. Thanks for all the great posts and local information. Dear C & C, "a lot of websites use use rooves for the plural of roof" for the very good reason that is correct (though roofs is also allowed these days). See the Oxford English Dictionary and Eric Partridge's "Usage and abusage". Whatever your preferred spelling, most people pronounce it rooves so why no spell it so? Likewise hooves may take either plural type. Regards, David
Cheers David I thought Hooves was right and then found a lot of the websites had rooves but there was another one which I forgot the URL to which said Roofs! But I have just found it at http://www.usingenglish.com/quizzes/answers.php?id=356 but as you say either can be used. As I said the English language is confusing enough for us English let alone people from overseas!! When I was in Dorset in 2005 there were thatchers working in the village - most interesting to watch. Again the sheer bulk of the thatching was incredible, imagine the structure needed to support the weight. The cost of replacement must also be impressive, given the specialised nature of the craft and the probable scarcity of thatchers today.
