Hello, I have found the record of a death in 1998 in the South Hams registration district, I thought this would mean the area in South Devon, but on the record the infered county is Hampshire. Which area of Hampshire would this refer to ? Derek.

There is a part of Basingstoke called "South Ham" - comes up on Google Maps. Derek I am guessing you were using Ancestry. I believe it is just a transcription error, all the entries for "South Hams" give the inferred county as Hampshire on Ancestry, whereas on FindMyPast the inferred county for all South Hams entries is Devon as expected. On similar lines some entries for the Isle of Wight in the Births section (1984-2005) have the inferred county as "Oxfordshire, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Berkshire" in Ancestry whereas on FindMyPast the inferred county is Hampshire. Both wrong of course, but FMP is perhaps a bit closer ;-) The inferred county should of course be Isle of Wight.
