On the 1881 census: Frederick Mills is listed as age 30, born abt. 1851 and head of household. His wife is Lydia, and mother Emily, who lives with them. He was born in Bridport, Dorset, England, but the family was living in the parish of Winchester, Hampshire - Street address is: 19 The Weirs. Household members were: Edward F. Mills 7 Emily Mills 56 Emily A. Mills 2 Ernest R. Mills Frederick Mills 30 Lydia Mills 35 Lydia J. Mills 4 William Mills 5 Frederick's occupation was Bricklayer. Hello Margot - not sure if you have Frederick in earlier censuses? If not, in 1871 he is Chell, Staffordshire listed as a bricklayer, lodging in the household of James WOOTON? This might be the family in 1851: Allington, Dorset Thomas MILLS 27 Flax Dresser. B Bridport Emily C 24. Twine Spinner Thomas 6 Fred 5mths plus a number of lodgers. Emily and all children listed as born Allington. [There is a marriage on FreeBMD of Thomas MILLS and Emily CORNICK in 1844, registered in Bridport.] In 1861 the family is still in Allington, Emily is widowed and has three more children. There is a Bridport/Allington OPC which has a little information on it but some of the vital years are missing. It appears that Lydia died in 1887 and Frederick in 1890, per FreeBMD. Most of the children are living in a lodging house in Winchester in 1891. Apologies if you have this already.
