    3. I've been downloading various images from the 1911 census and am a bit mystified by some of the reference numbers. A typical reference number, as provided in the title of the download, appears thus: RG14PN27625 RG78PN1579 RD507 SD3 ED23 SN197 I know RG14 refers to Registrar General and 14 follows on from previous censuses (e.g., RG11, RG12, etc.) Does "PN27625" refer to page number? Then what about the next part of the sequence: RG78PN1579? I don't understand this part at all. What does it refer to? The rest I can guess at: RD = Registration District; SD = Sub-Registration District; ED = Enumeration District; and SN = Schedule Number. What about folio numbers, though? Weren't they used in the 1911 census? Can anyone shed any light on this? I, and presumably most others, am used to seeing folio, page and schedule numbers. I know the schedule number is shown on the individual returns (top right-hand corner of the page); but where are the folio and page numbers? Thanks for any help Regards Ed

    3. Eddie I think PN is Piece Number, rather than Page AS for Folios and Pages which we all got used to with older censuses, you need to remember that what we get with the 1911 census is each separate household schedule, whereas earlier censuses were the enumerators schedule, which had many folios/pages. So you won't get folio and page numbers for the 1911. It might take some getting used to having different types of references. There is an attempt to provide this information at the following address: http://webspace.qmul.ac.uk/cgaa183/1911.html which seems to confirm your guesses as well.
