Rita Next time I am in Petersfield library (sometime in the next few weeks) I could look up James's birth around 1821 in the parish registers, if that's any help. If it's not there, then the James in the 1881 census could well be the same James that was baptised at Binsted in 1823, and the information on the 1881 census isn't accurate, either because James guessed where he was born, or the enumerator got it wrong. Both are possible! By the way, the village near Alton is Binsted, without the 'a'. Binstead with the 'a' is on the Isle of Wight. I see (from Sussex Marriage Index) that on 17 June 1800, Jemima Ann Ventham is mentioned alongside an Arthur Binsted. That's odd. There's also (17 May 1803) a Robert Ventham. So there could be relations in Sussex, too. If you Google <Ventham Binsted> you get http://www.curiousfox.com/history/hampshire_2.html and a few more places to look.
