Hello Listers I was reading a bit about Alfred the Great and found this: "Alfred married Ealhswith of the Gaini, daughter of AEthelred, the Great Mucil and Eadburh of Mercia, in 868 in Winchester, Hampshire, England. (Ealhswith of the Gaini died on 5 Dec 905 in St. Mary's Abbey, Winchester, Dorset.)" Winchester is in Hampshire when the couple married in 868 but in Dorset when Ealhswith died in 905. Was there a move of county boundaries way back then, or has whoever wrote it got it wrong? Many thanks Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
There seems to be several places on the web where this erroneous statement is repeated. However, if you read the Victorian County History Vol 2 (available at British History Online) it is definitely Winchester, Hampshire where she died. St Mary's Abbey Winchester was also known as Nunnaminster.
