Hi Pete It's quite common that terraces were originally named and numbered separately from the road, then the road was renumbered as a whole and the terrace name lost. My own house appears on the 1911 census as 4 Norfolk Terrace, but there's nothing to show that name anymore. The way I found out was by looking at Kelly's Street Directory for the locality. You need one of the ones that lists the whole street so that you can place the terrace between street corners etc. You should be able to tell from the 1911 census how many houses there were in the terrace which might also give a clue - my terrace only has 6 houses and we're the only block of 6 in the road. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to find the name of the terrace in the stonework of one of the houses, or the local museum may have a list of 'lost' names. Hope that helps, Kate in Devon, UK -----Original Message----- From: eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of pete.c@lineone.net Sent: 05 January 2009 20:32 To: ENG-HAMPSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-HANTS] 1911 Farnborough address I recently got a copy of my gr-grandfathers' entry in the 1911 census which gives his address as South Western Terrace, Queens Road, South Farnborough. I've been able to find Queens Road on modern maps, but no reference to South Western Terrace either on modern or old-maps.co.uk. Does anyone have any idea where this would have been please? Many thanks Pete
