yes indeed Sandy but the characters on windows do not include all the ASCII code charaters, and using them is far quicker than using Insert and Symbol etc I think we need to keep this off list in future as most of us now have got the gist of this. I've found everything I need there. (Living in Australia with dollars, I often need to insert the £ symbol.) Incidentally I use Thunderbird for mail (and Mailwasher to screen incoming mail) so I don't know if it works for everything.
