Wishing A Very Happy New Year to all. I would dearly like to know what happened to these relatives of mine - Reginald Beazley Montague SMITH born Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1886, Married Alice Downer in Southampton in 1908 last heard of working on the Fawley Ferry in 1940. Also, his son Ronald SMITH born Fawley or Hythe in 1908 I am also looking for his brother Archibald Jamison SMITH born Binstead, Isle of Wight in 1886. Last heard of in the 1901 census as Able Seaman on Pilot Boat Active in Southampton. Many thanks in advance for any help -- Richard van Rooijen Plymouth Devon http://www.brokencovenant.org.uk/ A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
Can't help you with your genealogy but there was never a Fawley Ferry as far as I know - just the Hythe Ferry which ran between Southampton Town Quay and Hythe Pier. Thanks Sandra. One of the perils of using information supplied by someone who lived in the locality. Theere was a Fawley Flyer which was the nickname for the train that used to go down to Fawley from Southampton but this stopped years ago though the line is still there and an occassional train does go along it.
