Hope the list owners do not mind but I have noticed a few people roups in the past have encountered this problem so I hope they can help. I have received an email from list subscriber asking how to pay for a book advertised on my website about N Stoneham. He says he can only pay by visa etc but the author is just an ordinary chap with no facilities. He recommends sending a cheque made out into GB pounds. to himself. Anyone know if this is OK or know of a better way. The sum is for 14GBP Chris SOUTHERN LIFE(UK) History of the villages of Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight http://southernlife.org.uk
If they both set up an account with PayPal they could do it. All you need is an email address. https://www.paypal.com/ca/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_send-money&nav=0.1 There is also Western Union, but the fee would probably be greater than the amount of the cheque. Chris, The difficulty about the cheque is that the Bank would make such extortionate charges (£10 minimum the last time I heard some years ago) that almost the whole sum is lost in those charges. All I can suggest is that the seller finds someone with a computer and a paypal account and ask them to do the transaction for him. The paypal fees for drawing down the sum would be less than £1. Most likely it would simply be returned. > Anyone know if this is OK or know of a better way. The US purchaser could get £15.00 and post the cash. I know many people frown on this, and understandably so. However, it's something I've done many times in the past, and as long as the money is suitably disguised, wrapped inside a covering letter for example, it's pretty safe. Having suggested that, I'd still opt for PayPal, as it offers certain guarantees for both buyer and seller. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" I'm surfing on a wave of nostalgia for an age yet to come Nostalgia - The Buzzcocks
Hi Chris, PayPal is easy, but the reciver picks up the fees. I think the sender can opt in the UK to have the fees included in his payment, but that isn't an option on our Aussie site. I also send Sterling cheques purchased from my local credit union where I pay the bank fees - as far as I know, what ever Sterling value I purchase the cheque for is honoured in the UK. Some of the Family History Societies I purchase indexes from only have this option for overseas payments, but they do stipulate that it must be a Sterling cheque. The sum is for 14GBP When wanting to make a purchase abroad, I use travellers cheques in the currency of the country in question, signed and countersigned. I've never had any problems and it's worked out cheaper than getting a sterling cheque drawn up or a bankers draft. A Canadian friend sent money to me by International Money Order which I was able to cash at the post office with no problems. My bank didn't know how to deal it the IMO!
