    3. If it is a war time service and you have her number or other identifying information, then Contact the Ministry of Defence to trace the service record of a direct relative by using this link: http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html note was once http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/service_records/service_records.html and may so still appear on several sites with the old wrong address... Here what you will see on the new page... Service records Requests from former Service personnel Requests from Interested parties Records of Deceased Personnel Where do I send my SAR form? What about records in the public domain? Access to personal data held by the MOD may be sought for many reasons, including: * proof of Service in HM Armed Forces * medical reasons * family history or research Requests from former Service personnel Requests from former Service personnel for his/her personal data held by the Ministry of Defence are processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998; such requests are called Subject Access Requests (SAR). A SAR must be made in writing and must be accompanied by proof of identity (e.g. a copy of a passport or recent utilities bill), and sufficient information to locate the data sought. To assist the search, your letter should include as much information as possible eg: * Service Number, Rank, Full Name, Date of Birth and period served (dates from and to). * Requests for data for ex-Army personnel must also include the Regiment or Corps. A full copy of the record can be requested however, original documents, discharge papers/books cannot be replaced. The MOD will also provide extracts from service records. Once all the necessary information has been received, your request will be processed and you should receive a reply within 40 calendar days. Requests from Interested parties Enquirers must provide a letter of consent, signed by the person to whom the records relate. Records of Deceased personnel Enquirers must provide the consent of the Next of Kin and unless the person died in Service, proof of death. A charge may be made for enquiries. Prior to 1972 all Royal Navy personnel were given their service record when they were discharged. For pension purposes the Royal Navy retained pay details. Therefore the only data held on Royal Navy personnel who served prior to 1972 is their Service details (number, rank, name etc) and a list of dates and ships/shore bases. Certificate of Kinship Information from the personal record of a deceased Ex-serviceman/woman can be released only with the consent of the official Next of Kin. The form aims to identify whose consent is required and the data you provide will be used only in connection with your enquiry. The form is retained for 2 years should you have subsequent queries. To download the Certificate of Kinship form and Search Document for the Army please click on the Army link below. For the Royal Navy, please click here and for the Royal Air Force, please click here. Where do I send my SAR form? Personnel records are stored at archives and repositories throughout the UK. Additionally there are also Subject Access Request Co-ordinators for each Service. You must send the completed SAR form to the relevant address. Click any of the links below to access the postal address you require. Royal Navy Army Royal Air Force Non Uk What about records in the public domain? The following personnel Service records have been transferred to the National Archive (formerly the Public Record Office) and are available for public access. * Royal Navy Officers commissioned prior to 1914 * Royal Navy Ratings who enlisted prior to 1924 and First World War records for the Women's Royal Naval Service * Royal Marine Officers commissioned prior to 1926 * Royal Marine Other Ranks that enlisted prior to 1926 * Army Officers commissioned prior to 1920 * Army Other Ranks that enlisted prior to 1920 * Royal Air Force Officers that served prior to 1922 * Royal Air Force Airmen that served prior to 1924 Service records which pre-date those held by the MOD have been transferred to the National Archive and are freely available for public access. However the National Archives is not resourced to carry out searches. Enquirers are instead welcome to visit, or hire an independent researcher - see the National Archive website for further details. I am still unsure of what to do, who can help? If you have any other queries about service records or are not sure about which office to write to please contact the Veterans Free Helpline For information on historical records please see our links page.

    3. Hi Ruth, Please be very careful about using naming patterns - they are very much a generalisation and varied from one part of the country to another. Additionally, reliance on such a pattern may not take into account the birth and infant death of intervening children. 3. Dear Valerie, can't answer your immediate question but I was struck by the fact that the Gulley family (and Gully, Gullyes, Golley) have been in Somerset since time immemorial. The name is from Middle English golias 'a giant' (obviously a nickname from the Biblical one), so predates the conquest but the first known record was John and Thomas Gulias in the Assizes for Somerset of 1202. 3. Help please Ruth GULLEY, was born Portsea C1801. Ruth married my great great grandfather, William PITTARD, in Somerset. Ruth's first two daughters were Eliza and Charlotte. Relying on the naming pattern that seems to have been followed in my family at that time, I'm "assuming" that ELIZA was the name of Ruth's mother and Charlotte PITTARD was the name of William's mother. Again relying on the naming pattern William was the name of William PITTARD's father and Joseph GULLEY was the name of Ruth's father. Does anyone on the list know of a possible Joseph and Eliza GULLEY? Ruth's parents would probably have been born C1775. I know I am assuming a lot but I live in hopes! Valerie

    2. Ann Daniel
    3. Dear Listers, Am seeking information on the family of James Bennett prior to his being convicted and transported to Tasmania in 1828. He was married to a Charlotte Hatton on 21st Feb 1825 at St. Marys, Newington, Surrey, and had a daughter Mary Ann Bennett shortly after, say 1826, but after James was transported, Charlotte went back to her father surname Baker at Lymington to live. James subsequently was granted an annulment from his marriage to Charlotte. Am wondering what fate held for his daughter Mary Ann Bennett who was most likely raised in Lymington. Help would be most welcome please. Cheers Ann Daniel, Tasmania

    3. There are 4 Mary Ann Bennett's being married between 1850 and 1855 in Newington, Surrey. I don't see one married in Lymington. If one of them is yours it is hard to tell as there is more then one choice with each. 3. Hi, Could SKS please tell me where to look for more proof of my 2 x grandmothers parents, siblings. My 2 x grandmother is Ellen Jameson m to Simon King 1854 Southampton. Ages on marriage certificate is 'Full'. Father John, occ clerk. I have copies of 1861,71,81 census. (Dorset & Hampshire) Birth year varies between 1825 & 1828. Place of birth varies - Paddington, Middlesex and London. Children (I have their birth certificates), varies from using first names to second names to variants - Flora Jane, William George, Eleanor (Ellen) and Ann. Ellen died 1883 South Stoneham. I have found this family in 1841 census that fits - Borough of St Marylebone John Jameson, 45 Army (not born county) Jane Jameson, 45 Wife (born Scotland) Ellen 15 (born county) Frederick 13 (born county) Found Marriage in Marylebone for John Young Jameson 1817 (b 1790 London) to Jane Oliver (b 1786 Scotland) Children, Robert 1818, William 1819, Eleanor 1823, James 1824, Frederick 1827. Have John's death certificate 1845 and the informant is daughter Eleanor Jameson. John's occ Clerk. I have his will and he is listed as Gentleman of Marylebone and list the above children with James as executor. Wife, Jane then shows up on 1851 & 1861 census living with James and dying in Liverpool 1863. I can trace all of this family with the exemption of not knowing if my Ellen is their Eleanor. 1851 there is a possibility of Ellen as a domestic in Middlesex. The marriage certificate of Ellen's does not say father is deceased. Thanks, Rose.

    2. Jim
    3. You may be wondering if this has been sent to the wrong list but I am trying to confirm whether or not I have the correct Hannah REED, possibly born in Titchfield, in my wife's HARVEY tree. My copies of the Kingsbury Episcopi Registers give Thomas Harvey, h., & Hannah Reed 25 December 1798 1. As there is no other parish added after Hannah Reed, I assumed that she was probably born in Kingsbury Episcopi 2. When I look both before and after this particular entry for reasonable distances, I cannot find another REED which makes me wonder whether Hannah was not local. I have been given the following Hannah REED as a possibility and the age agrees even though this REED family were c80 miles away in Titchfield, HAM, ENG. Hannah's age fits and there appears to be no other record of her marrying (or dying early) William REED born c. 1740 married Mary GROVES in St. Peters, Titchfield Dec 1766 children: John Mar 1766 m. 3. Hi Jim, First, it would be wrong to assume that Hannah was born in K E. It may well have been her abode of settlement, but this could be for a number of reasons, not just birth. As suggested by another poster, Reed is quite a common name and you should look for all sorts of spelling variations: REDE, REID, READ, RED, RIED. I have a similar problem on one of my lines and even after 40 odd years of research, I still can't conclude about the origins of my man.
