    1. [ENG-HANTS] Records in the French Archives?
    2. Claire Bennett-Claypole
    3. Hi I am writing to the list to see if anyone can suggest the way forward with the following query: My gggg grandfather who was born and died in Hampshire served as a corporal with the 7th Hussars (Queens Own Regiment)in Spain during the Peninsular War. He was captured and imprisoned in France in 1809 for 5 years. I have his discharge certificate but was wondering if the French Government would have records about his captivity and release in the French Archives? I did try and search the Archives but of course they are in French which makes it difficult if one does not speak or read French. Would the British Government have records of British soldiers imprisoned by the French? Is it worthwhile searching newspapers to see if his name is mentioned? Any suggestions of how I can find out more would be very grateful! Claire Canberra, Australia

    3. Hello Trace - not sure I saw a response to your query. There are several John NICHOLAS in Hampshire in 1901 of about the right age to be having a young family unfortunately. Do you know when he married and what his wife's name is? or the name of the son? occupation? Sorry, more questions and I know you said you don't have much information, but every little helps with the search. Best wishes, Patsy - New Zealand name NICHOLAS in PORTSEA > Hi > > I don't know a lot about the person I'm looking for other than he had a > son > in 1904/5 in Portsea, I'm therefore hoping that he may be there in 1901 > so, > could some kind soul check for a John nicholas in Portsea in 1901? > > Thanks ever so much > > Trace

    1. [ENG-HANTS] Old Basing - Burial Records
    2. Shelley
    3. Hello, I am researching a John FIELD who we believe died between 1822 and 1841. He lived with his family in Old Basing and his wife continued to live there until her death in 1863. She is buried there. This is very likely where he too should be buried. But (of course!) there is a gap in the burial records for Old Basing from November 1823 thru November 1836. I am not sure whether the "gap" means that burials were stopped or whether the records for that time were damaged/lost. In the event that no burials occurred in Old Basing during that time, can anyone suggest in which parish an Old Basing family's loved ones might have been buried? Thank you! Shelley

    3. I agree. On two previous occasions I have sent emails to my spouse, who's email address at work closely matches one of the Rootsweb addresses that I subscribe to. As the law of unintended consequences predicted, it went to the Rootsweb list in error. I suggest we drop this thread and get on with the business of genealogy. 3. Deirdre - The RAF was formed 1st April 1918 out of the RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) and the RFC. For events "towards the end of the war", maybe you could look under RAF rather than RFC. And for a casualty, they should appear in the Roll of those killed, available on the CWGC website. Cheers, Doug. > I am hoping someone on the list will be able to help. Dear Sandra May I suggest to Sandra and all who have been affected by the wars that you place your remembrances on the BBC remembrance site.  There is a facility to add photos and memorials. bbc.co.uk/remembrance Regards Pat The media seems to be emphasing how the wars affected every family and I record here just some of my grandparents' immediate relatives who hailed from Southampton and environs. World War I My Grandfather, Harry FOSKETT, who served in the Royal Navy and died of "Dementia" in 1920 at the age of 34, leaving a widow and five children.  The symptoms came on after serving on HMS Agincourt at the Battle of Jutland. Recorded on the Cenotaph in Southampton and Winslow Memorial in Buckinghamshire. His brothers Levi and Frederick both served but returned safely. My Grandmother's brother Owen PICKETT, was killed in France in 1918 and is recorded on the Southampton Cenotaph.  Her other brothers served in the RN (Ernest PICKETT), Air Force (Harry PICKETT) and Army (Samuel PICKETT) and they returned home. My Grandfather Leonard Charles MABEY, served in the RN and came home safely. My Grandmother's brothers, Percival, William and David MORANT, all served in the army and returned safely.  William was injured in the trenches and was mentioned in despatches.  Her first cousins Henry MORANT and Lionel MORANT were killed and are on the Southampton Cenotaph. Although most of the menfolk served in the armed forces during WW2, the only casualty was my Grandmother's brother Ernest PICKETT who died in the mercantile marine.  However, civilian casulaties in Southampton were high.  "Laddie" PICKETT was blown up when Supermarine was bombed and my other grandmother's first cousin Philip MORANT was killed in a bombing raid along with his wife and six of his seven children when their house took a direct hit at Hedgend in 1941.
