Hi Heather - in 1841 there is a Sarah JAMES in South St, Gosport, Alverstoke aged 45 with husband Adam, a cutler. There are a number of other people in the household so may be a similar situation to the 1851 where Sarah is a lodging house keeper (also in South St). Hope this gives something to think about - happy to forward the image if you would like it. Do you have Alinda in 1841? Baptism at Odiham - 29Sep1805 Elijah - Robt & Eleanor James Baptism at Froyle - 14Sep1788 John - Robt & Eleanor James - Vagrants Other known children - Henry and Adam. Entries refer to the couple as vagrants or travellers. They were part of the large James family of Gypsies who travelled Hampshire and adjoining counties. The baptism at Froyle took place in September when there was an influx of Gypsies for hop picking. My Gypsy ancestor Samuel Ayres was baptized there on 7Sep1788. If it was a child, then it would say "Son/daughter of <father's name> and you might get the mother's name (usually undesignated) in the informant column if she was the informant. A woman may have "widow of <name of husband>" in the occupation column. No names of children, living or dead are given, nor the names of any siblings. It will usually give the date, place of death, name of deceased, age at death, occupation, cause of death. The information was only as good as the informant's knowledge, so the age in particular can be way off. You'll find this site useful to bookmark: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm

Dear Heather, it should really have been "Sheet, Hants." as Sheet is a village on the London Road from Petersfield (which it is close by) to Liphook, i.e., at the eastern edge of Hants., near the border with West Sussex. The mill near the bridge on the River Rother worked from 900 AD to the last century. Regards, David
Thank you. Guess that's not going to help me find parents. -----Original Message----- From: Claire Bennett-Claypole [mailto:claypole@netspeed.com.au] Sent: Sunday, 7 December 2008 1:33 PM To: 'eng-hampshire@rootsweb.com' Subject: Records in the French Archives? Hi I am writing to the list to see if anyone can suggest the way forward with the following query: My gggg grandfather who was born and died in Hampshire served as a corporal with the 7th Hussars (Queens Own Regiment)in Spain during the Peninsular War. He was captured and imprisoned in France in 1809 for 5 years. I have his discharge certificate but was wondering if the French Government would have records about his captivity and release in the French Archives? I did try and search the Archives but of course they are in French which makes it difficult if one does not speak or read French. Would the British Government have records of British soldiers imprisoned by the French? Is it worthwhile searching newspapers to see if his name is mentioned? Any suggestions of how I can find out more would be very grateful! Claire Canberra, Australia
