    3. Hi listers, Does anyone have George CHURCHER in their family tree? A cousin has found a letter of recommendation in her late mother's papers which begins "George CHURCHER, gentleman, 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Hampshire regiment.........." and signed by Queen Victoria dated 25 April 1890. Neither of us have any knowledge of this gentleman's connection with our families. Ring any bells? Thanks, Gill

    2. John Belchamber
    3. Hello Listers My name is John and I am researching the Belchamber surname.I am putting this on the list hoping it will ring some bells. My great Aunt Emma Belchamber born 1871 in Plaistow,Sussex married William Edward Philps on the 11th 0f Sept.1897 in the parish church,Portsea Island. William Edward Philps the son of William George and Elizabeth Philps nee King, was born at 47 Maitland St.Portsea Island on the 28th of April,1869.William Edward and Emma Philps had two children Annie Florence Beatrice born in Portsea in the June qtr of 1898 and Frederick Samuel James born in Plaistow,Sussex in the Dec qtr of 1900.In the 1901 census the family were living in Newcastle upon tyne(As Philips) where William Edward was a Bombardier and Emma a Bombardier's wife. After that I lost track of them, until the 1911 census came out this week.In this census I have found them in Aldershot living in Stanhope Lines, the family are in the military census, but William Edward is now a Canteen Manager in the camp, working for Brooks Dickson and co.Ltd. On there marriage certificate William Edward is a Driller the same as his father,so maybe they worked in the dockyard.Witness,s were Emily Hill and Arthur Lush.Family legend says the William and Emma remained in Aldershot, where some of the older family members visited them. Is there anyone out can add to this, any descendants out there. 1. [ENG-HANTS] Winchester - Dorset!!
    2. PMR
    3. Hello Listers I was reading a bit about Alfred the Great and found this: "Alfred married Ealhswith of the Gaini, daughter of AEthelred, the Great Mucil and Eadburh of Mercia, in 868 in Winchester, Hampshire, England. (Ealhswith of the Gaini died on 5 Dec 905 in St. Mary's Abbey, Winchester, Dorset.)" Winchester is in Hampshire when the couple married in 868 but in Dorset when Ealhswith died in 905. Was there a move of county boundaries way back then, or has whoever wrote it got it wrong? Many thanks Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    3. There seems to be several places on the web where this erroneous statement is repeated. However, if you read the Victorian County History Vol 2 (available at British History Online) it is definitely Winchester, Hampshire where she died. St Mary's Abbey Winchester was also known as Nunnaminster. 3. Hi Carol, This tip appeared on the Hampshire list. You may already have tried it. >Got this tip from another list about a possible way of finding "missing" people on the 1911 Census. Go to the advanced search options and for Surname just put a comma (,) nothing else, no brackets. Then the first name/s plus other details you have....... Place of birth, date of birth +/- 1 or 2 years for the person you are looking for. Then a first name of another household member you expect to find with them. Then search. < Regards Lesley Baxendale Colwyn Bay, N Wales -----Original Message----- From: eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JohnASaul@aol.com Sent: 13 January 2009 15:23 To: eng-hampshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-HANTS] 1911 census - help with lateral thinking [KNIGHT] Thank you to everyone who has replied. I was looking for my grandmother, Doris Emily KNIGHT born in Vernham Dean in 1901, her parents Frederick [1874] and Martha Mary [1874], and brothers Herbert Thomas [1899] and Frederick Harold [1907]. Further children born 1908 and 1912 also born in Vernham Dean. Trying to think of a transcription for the beautiful letter "K", and whatever might follow it! All suggestions welcome. As I said before, I've tried all currently available counties and various forenames. I guess I'll have to wait until greater search facilities are in operation, or failing that, the census is available to search page by page as on Ancestry. I'm not grumbling as it's wonderful to have the census available early, and I've had success with the other side of my family. Thanks again. Carol ............................................. 1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] 1911 Farnborough address
    2. Kate Burhouse
    3. Hi Pete It's quite common that terraces were originally named and numbered separately from the road, then the road was renumbered as a whole and the terrace name lost. My own house appears on the 1911 census as 4 Norfolk Terrace, but there's nothing to show that name anymore. The way I found out was by looking at Kelly's Street Directory for the locality. You need one of the ones that lists the whole street so that you can place the terrace between street corners etc. You should be able to tell from the 1911 census how many houses there were in the terrace which might also give a clue - my terrace only has 6 houses and we're the only block of 6 in the road. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to find the name of the terrace in the stonework of one of the houses, or the local museum may have a list of 'lost' names. Hope that helps, Kate in Devon, UK -----Original Message----- From: eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hampshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of pete.c@lineone.net Sent: 05 January 2009 20:32 To: ENG-HAMPSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-HANTS] 1911 Farnborough address I recently got a copy of my gr-grandfathers' entry in the 1911 census which gives his address as South Western Terrace, Queens Road, South Farnborough. Queens Road is still there and is now within a conservation area. Most of the original houses remain and so it is very likely the terrace is still there too. As suggested by another lister, the terrace is probably a short row of houses within Queens Road. (Some of my family lived in the same road at numbers 68 and 70 .) Rushmoor Council or perhaps the Post Office in Farnborough should each be able to confirm if the terrace remains. Google should throw up contact details for each. Good luck Ann Hampshire, UK

    1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] ROLL CALL STAMP WILD
    2. dubhda2
    3. STAMP is quite rare in Hampshire (some on the Isle of Wight) - it was found most often around Doncaster. There was a Stamp family living at Ovington for a time (Wessex-Plus-L Archives). WILD is a fairly common name in England and certainly appears in Hampshire (as Wield, Wild, Wilde, Wyld, or Wylde) - one site http://wildes.net/wilde/index.html has done a lot of research, collecting 50 families, but the greatest concentration and possible origin was in the Oldham/Stockport area in the N.W. The only Hampshire Stephen Wild on this site was born about 1770 in Basingstoke (about right for the father of your Stephen though no child Stephen recorded for him, his last was in 1802 so perhaps he had Stephen later). None of the other Wilds of about the right age to be Stephen's parents had a child Stephen, so it would appear he was from out of the county - the site I mentioned thinks many Hampshire Wildes came from Kent. 1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] Searching without a surname on 1911 census
    2. Kate Burhouse
    3. Has anyone managed to find any hyphenated surnames? I'm desperately trying to find my grandfather, Charles William Webber-Taylor, born 17/12/1908 in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire. Even using the comma doesn't appear to bring his entry up. Any ideas? Thank you so much for this great tip. Finally found my KNIGHT family as KNIGTH. Carol
