    3. Hi Sandra It was originally known as the Portsmouth Sailors Rest, opened on 13 June 1881, this was one of the hostels opened by Agnes Weston to keep sailors out of the public houses etc. They had reading rooms and a restaurant, accommodation came at a later date I would say. Your Gfather could have just had a room for the night of the census. The Royal part would have come later as well. 3. Yes, this is very good. However, they still seem to be playing around with it and on different days, different sets of records are available. E.g. yesterday Births 1916 to 2005 was exactly that. Today, despite what the heading says, it is 1984 to 2005 only. One word of warning when searching. I found a birth in Bournemouth reg dist as it should have been but the county given was "Sussex, Isle of Wight" ! So even when all the records are up and running, transcriptions may once again be a problem. 3. Would anybody be willing to look something up for me? I'm trying to find out when my gt-gt-gt grandfather was born and who his parents were. His name was Daniel Quinn or Quin. According to his Naval records, his date of birth was 20th September 1809 in Portsea, Hampshire. I'm assuming that he was baptised but I don't know whether it would have been Church of England or Roman Catholic. I'm assuming that his father's name was Henry because that's the name of his eldest son, but I could be mistaken. I have no idea what his mother's name could have been, although a Catherine is mentioned briefly in his Naval record. I'd be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this. The records don't appear to have been added to the LDS. Many thanks Jo I use BullGuard Spamfilter to keep my inbox clean. It is completely free: www.bullguard.com/freespamfilter

    3. Hello, Can anyone tell me the names of any schools in Aldershot in the 1890s, please? I am looking for a Rose Emma Kathleen BRANT who was born in 1886 in Kent, the illegitimate daughter of Minnie BRANT(details from her birth certificate), Rose was living with William & Pheobe CONSTANT in Aldershot, Hants. on the 1901census as their adopted daughter, and on the 1911 census is still with them as their adopted daughter but by this time she is married to a soldier. On both census her place of birth is given as MALDON, ESSEX Also was she baptised at Aldershot? The CONSTANT family were living in Selsey, Sussex but left there sometime after 1866 and are on the 1871 census for Union Street, Aldershot. I haven't been able to locate either the CONSTANT family or Rose on the 1891 census, anywhere. On the 1901 census Rose is 14 yrs. of age and her name is listed as BRANT not CONSTANT. Myrtle

    3. Hi Chris, PayPal is easy, but the reciver picks up the fees. I think the sender can opt in the UK to have the fees included in his payment, but that isn't an option on our Aussie site. I also send Sterling cheques purchased from my local credit union where I pay the bank fees - as far as I know, what ever Sterling value I purchase the cheque for is honoured in the UK. Some of the Family History Societies I purchase indexes from only have this option for overseas payments, but they do stipulate that it must be a Sterling cheque. My experience is that for an amount as small as £14 the charges for an IMO would probably be at least as much again and for some currencies they are no longer available because of government worries over money laundering. In payment for an obituary lookup by staff at a library in Canada last year I sent cash, the only viable option for the small amount in question (£20 iirc). I exchanged the money at the Post Office (no commission) and sent it in Canadian dollars with a covering letter. Of course I agreed this with them via email first. -- Stuart Morgan

    3. Chris, The difficulty about the cheque is that the Bank would make such extortionate charges (£10 minimum the last time I heard some years ago) that almost the whole sum is lost in those charges. All I can suggest is that the seller finds someone with a computer and a paypal account and ask them to do the transaction for him. The paypal fees for drawing down the sum would be less than £1.
