    3. Hi I am also interested in Meaker family and have a lot of info on them - and Ruby has kindly sent me her research. My great grandmother was Mary Ann Meaker and I am in touch with lots of her descendents (10 of her children grew to be adults and had families.) I would be very interested in any more contacts or info.... 3. I am hoping a lister out there can tell me about the "Firs Home" in Holdenhurst Bournenmouth. An ancestor of my husband was a patient there in 1891. I believe it was a hospital for consumption patients. I have only been able to find out a small amount about this place. Does anyone know where exactly this hospital was and if the buidling is still there. Any help gratefully received. Thankyou. _________________________________________________________________ Love Hotmail?  Check out the new services from Windows Live! http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/132630768/direct/01/

    1. [ENG-HANTS] Batchelor - never too old to learn!
    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. I did my research on my Batchelor line of Southampton and environs nearly 40 years ago. The latest census available was the 1861 and I found my Annie Batchelor (GGmother) after hours of searching through the originals in London. There were no locally held copies available in those days - in fact I am not even sure that microfilm had been invented then! And certainly no index to ease the searching. A cousin started looking at the same line recently and imagine my shock/horror when he came up with a more likely candidate. After visiting all the later census returns, I have to agree with him and that my "tree" is not correct. Fortunately the research wasn't totally wasted as both women shared the same great grandparents. I think the lesson here is that one should always review past research in the light of new records that become available. Just because I did the research all those years ago - didn't make it right. 1. [ENG-HANTS] 1911 Search Anomaly
    2. Francis Payne
    3. I recently searched for a John Francis, living in Walkford in 1911 and duly got one match. Purchased the original document only to find the address was Bournemouth - nothing to do with Walkford. I've now realised that when doing a search using "residential place" any valid name within a certain registration district will bring up the same result. i.e. the same John Francis appears if I use Walkford, Pokesdown, Bournemouth, etc - all being in the Christchurch district. This therefore renders this search feature quite useless or, at best, very misleading. If you don't buy the full image you'd never know and draw an incorrect assumption as to where someone was living - as I had ! I reported this to the census co who refunded my 30 credits very promptly. However, there was no explanation re the problem or if they understood it or intended to fix it. Anyone else have a similar experience ? Francis Auckland, NZ

    3. Hi Francis You may have to email them a few times before they take notice. They tend to send out a generic reply to error reports, unless you persist - then they take notice. When I was using the Beta test site, I realised that the search engine would not allow searches for any surnames transcribed with a hyphen e.g. Webber-Taylor. When I reported this the first time, they just sent out a generic reply about the search facility being limited until they'd assessed the demand. It wasn't until I reported the problem for the third time, each one a little more forceful, that they finally looked into the problem properly and realised that I had highlighted a real issue. They are now trying to find a solution. 1. [ENG-HANTS] Flaxfield, Basingstoke
    2. Eddie Thomas
    3. I've just found an ancestor in the 1911 census whose abode is given as Flaxfield, Basingstoke. His abode is some kind of institution, as the entire page lists 20 individuals (all males, with one female exception), whose ages range from 15 to 74. Virtually every one of them is employed - none of them are described as paupers or similar. Occupations range from street musician, hawker and labourer to hound follower, merchant and painter. I imagine that this is some sort of lodging house. From what I can make out, there are probably approximately 2-3 pages before the one featuring my relative and goodness knows how many after it, though cost has prohibited me from confirming this. Does anyone know of any such institution in the Flaxfield area of Basingstoke around this period? I've got an Alan Godfrey map of Basingstoke from 1894 which shows a Flaxfield House on Flaxfield Road, though I've no idea if this is the place. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards Ed
