    1. WATERS and ASTON of Fordingbridge
    2. James Phillips-Evans
    3. Dear List, Having found the baptism of my ancestor William SAUNDERS of Fordingbridge in Poole, Dorset in 1802 I am surprised to have been led back into Hampshire on the trail of his mother. William's parents were Edward SAUNDERS and Susannah WATERS who were married in Studland, Dorset in 1798. The SAUNDERS family go back to the late 1600s in that area but there is no trace of a Susannah WATERS in Dorset, indeed the name WATERS does not seem to feature at all in Dorset to any significant degree. Surely it can be no coincidence that a Susanna WATERS was born at exactly the right time (1778) in Fordingbridge, daughter of John WATERS and his wife Susannah ASTON who were married in Fordingbridge in 1763. There is no sign of a marriage of this Susannah WATERS in Hampshire so I am very hopeful that she is the one who married Edward SAUNDERS in Dorset in 1798 - although I have no idea why she might have ended up in Dorset. It would however explain why William SAUNDERS who was still in Poole in! 1823 (when his illegitimate son was born) was in Ellingham, Hampshire by 1825 when he married Elizabeth KENCHINGTON in Fordingbridge. Perhaps he had left Poole to stay with maternal relatives where no-one knew of his past? Further evidence is offered by the fact that John and Susannah WATERS also named two of their daughters Rachel, the second (replacing an earlier daughter who died) was baptised in 1785 in Fordingbridge and William SAUNDERS (her presumed nephew) named one of his own daughters Rachel - not a common name at that time - in 1846. The name Rachel seems to have entered the WATERS family via Susannah ASTON who I take to be a sister of the Rachel ASTON who married Francis COLLINS in Fordingbridge in 1763. It all seems to fit so well and I have unearthed no contrary evidence. I have found nothing on the origins of John WATERS or Susannah ASTON so I do not know if they were of Fordingbridge (or indeed Hampshire) but a John WATERS married an Amey SCOVELL in Fordingb! ridge in 1758 - perhaps Amey died in childbirth and John then married Susannah ASTON in 1763? Also, a John WATERS had two daughters baptised in Fordingbridge in 1753 and 1755 - perhaps they are the father and younger sisters of 'my' John WATERS who was born/baptised elsewhere before the family settled in Fordingbridge? Any information or comments would be most welcome. Thanks James Phillips-Evans

    3. I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that you need to order the certificate to find that out. I think you can order the certificate and ask specifically to have them only send it if the mother's name is Redman. 1. MANSBRIDGE/COLLIS, MICHELDEVER
    2. Les Hewett
    3. In the 1881 British census there is a Mansbridge family at *Kings Worthy, Hampshire: John (72) agricultural labourer, b.Micheldever, and his wife Phoebe, of Kingsworthy Lane; William (66), b.Kingsworthy, labourer, and his wife Elizabeth, and grandaughter Elizabeth Collis (Kingsworthy Street). There is also John (51), b. Micheldever, woodman, and his wife Henrietta, sons Arthur and Alfred, and Louisa Ball, servant (Duck Street Cottage, Micheldever). There is also Richard Collis (71), b.Micheldever, grocer and baker, and his wife Elizabeth (70), grocers’ shop, Micheldever. Could John, William and Elizabeth be family for Arthur Alexander Mansbridge, and was Arthur, grandson of John, named for his uncle in New South Wales? *Kings Worthy is about 18 miles and Micheldever about 21 miles from Southampton where Alexander was tried, and a further 15 miles to Portsmouth Harbour from which the “Captain Cook” sailed. Alexander Mansbridge: There was an Alexander Mansbridge on the convict transport “Captain Cook” (2), arrived 26th August, 1833 (103 704 907 x 635). He was Convict No. 33-1760; aged 19 years, single, Protestant, of Hampshire, England. He was a stableboy/gardener’s labourer (no previous convictions), and had been sentenced at the Southampton Quarter Sessions, 16 October, 1832, for stealing a coat; he was sentenced to seven years transportation. He was born c.1812 and able to read and write; height: 5ft. 3½ ins., complexion: ruddy and a little freckled; brown hair, blue eyes, with a tattoo “AM” on upper right arm. (Indent No. 158). *“Captain Cook” departed Portsmouth 5th May; arrived 26th August 1833 (113 days); 230 embarked; 226 landed; Captain William Thompson; Surgeon John Morgan. [Goulburn death registration above?] He received his Certificate of Freedom, 5th May 1841. If correctly linked to our Ann Clarke in 1850, he was a mail carrier at Keepit, NSW.

    3. I have found my William YELF and his family on the 1851 census for Southampton but I am trying to find his parents Robert and Sophia whom I believe moved to Southampton from the IOW sometime in the early 1850's. Also trying to establish the whereabouts of Robert YELF and his wife Catherine WILLIAMS in 1871 they are in Southampton in 1881. Any help greatly appreciated, Carole.

    1. John Groves
    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. Pamela, Was I wasting my time sending you all that information about John Groves? Henry Groves's father John died before Henry was born, and was raised by Jeremiah Jacobs his stepfather who was a bricklayer. As Henry didnt know his father personally it would be unlikely that he would follow his natural father's occupation, but followed his step-father's calling instead. I think John was a carpenter, but as he probably worked on boat building (very common on the Island) he might well have called himself a shipwright. As I said in my off-list emails, you will have to purchase a few certificates to verify the information, but having spent a number of years on the IOW Groves families, I think that what I sent you was correct Kind regards and happy hunting Sandra

James Henry Groves's father John Groves Occupation was a Shipwright > and not a Bricklayer like James Henry Groves. Hello Pamela. I don't know if this is your James Henry Groves but it's the closest I could get to a match. There were no James or James Henrys in 1861 that matched the details you gave . This one however is possible but is living with a step father. That may not rule him out as several of my ancestors gave their father's names on marriage certificates when the fathers had been dead for years. In the 1861 Census the Isle of Wight came under Hampshire 1861 Census Whippingham, Hampshire 21 Alfred Street Jeremiah Jacobs; Head; 45; b. Chale, Hants Mary A Jacobs; Wife; 38; b. He could have died when Mary was pregnant and in the Census Eliza might have nearing her 7th Birthday Deaths Jun 1854 Groves  John    I of Wight  2b 307   ---------------------------------------------------------------- Here is Mary Ann's second marriage Marriages Dec 1858 Groves  Mary Ann    I.Wight  2b 884   JACOBS  Jeremiah    I.Wight  2b 884   ---------------------------------------------------------- I looked for John Groves Marriage and came up with this one but at the moment only his name is showing. If you try again in a week or two then you might find his bride Marriages Mar 1843 GROVES  John    Isle of Wight  8 339   Unfortunately the IGI doesn't have this marriage. Maybe now you have this information someone will be able to look John and his family up in the 1851 Census. With luck you'll find he was a shipwright. It looks as though James henry followed the trade of his step father. Good luck Dot Salisbury, Wilts

    3. Hello My gt gt grandfather, William Alfred DYER was born in Lymington between 1830 and 1833, his father was Joseph DYER, a coachman. I would love to find him with his family on the 1841 or 1851 census, which would give me a clue as to his mother and siblings. I only have information from the time of his marriage to Mary Emma CHIVERTON in 1855 and I have him and his children on the 1861 census onwards. Does anyone have access to either of these census (1841 or 1851). I'm not sure if this is a difficult request as especially the 1841 census, it quite often isn't indexed. If it is at all possible, then I would be very grateful. Regards Ally (Derby)

    1. DO ANYONE KNOW OF A JOHN GROVES OCCUPATION SHIPWRIGHT
    2. pamelaj.groves
    3. Hello List, My Husbands 2X Great Grandfather was John Groves he was a Shipwright. His son James Henry Groves was married on May 5, 1878 to Elizabeth Catherine Switzer. They were married at The Parish Church, in Portsmouth Hampshire. Both James and Elizabeth were living at Park Street, Portsea, Portsmouth at the time of their marriage. James Henry Groves put is age as 27 and a Bachelor. And Elizabeth Catherine Switzer was 19 and a Spinster. Elizabeth Switzers father was Henry Switzer a Seaman. When most people get married and put their fathers Name and Occupation am I correct that if both fathers were dead the marriage certificate would usually say Deceased under their names? I know both the Groves and Switzers had relatives living on the Isle of Wight. As in the 1881 Census it states that James Henry Groves known as Henry was living in Whippingham, Isle of Wight with wife Elizabeth and their son James Henry Groves, and that James known as Henry was born in West Cowes between 1849 and 1850. Would someone elderly have changed occupation from Bricklayer to Shipwright? As I know that in the 1881 census their was a John Groves living at Simeon St Grove Cottage, Ryde, Isle of Wight Hampshire, England and whose Occupation was a Bricklayer. When I received James Henry Groves marriage certificate I was quite shocked that John Groves his father had a completely different Occupation than I thought? James Henry Groves's father John Groves Occupation was a Shipwright and not a Bricklayer like James Henry Groves. If anyone has seen any information about a John Groves a Shipwright in the Isle of Wight or Portsmouth, Hampshire I would appreciate some help Please. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

    3. Dear Dot, no, like Steve Davis I'm not connected with anyone interesting. Just intrigues by rare names - though these turned out to be not so rare. In view of the etymology and the Census taker's confusion, it looks as thought the 'G' was soft. Regards, David

    3. Hi David Would you mind doing a look up for me on the 1841 census for JAMES WHITE and his parents THOMAS & MARY WHITE. I believe that Thomas was a postman and living in Fordingbridge or maybe be Minstead. James would have been about 15 on the 1841 census. I would also appreciate any other family members that appear on the census with his parents and any details would be more than greatfully accepted. Owing to the name White it has been very hardto get any trace on this family for me. Thank you very much for your time it is greatly apprecited.
