    1. RE: [ENG-HANTS] re: YORE COMMON
    2. Pat Barsby
    3. Thank you Linda & Tony for your help on the above. As for the famous painter....well I couldn't make a claim to be an ancestor at this stage I'm afraid. The family I'm following is actually on my hubby's line [he's certainly interested, but not in the hard work] and it's WILEY/WHILEY-PARFITT and TENNANT all Royal Marine's with a link to the Acsension Isles around 1838-1850 where some of them married each other [one daughter only 13-14 years old at the time] and began families before returning back to England. Their children also seemed to have a career in the Royal Marine's and this has made life more difficult in tracing them on census but I'm getting there slowly and it's been really rewarding when I make a find. Thank you once again for your help. Kindest regards, Pat > Hi Pat > As Jon has said, the correct spelling is EWER Common - it is > still there today consisting of a small area of grass > commonland off Park Road, Gosport at one end and leading to > Mount Pleasant Rd at the other. > It is in Alverstoke but the Marine Barracks at Forton were > not there in 1820. 3. Hi Pat In the 1861 census of Gosport there is a "EWER COMMON". the Royal marine Barracks at forton was in Gosport, so yes, that would be nearby. If you do a search on google there is a fair amount of info on Ewer Common, which I presume to be the place you are enquiring about? Kindest regards, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. YORE COMMON
    2. Pat Barsby
    3. Hi Listers, I found a few baptisms for my WILEY/WHILEY family at ALVERSTOKE on microfiche yesterday and next to one child was the address of 'YORE COMMON' or at least that is what is appeared to be. This would be in 1820 and I wondered, would any lister be able to confirm this is the correct name please? Also would it have been near a Royal Marine Barracks and is the common still there today? I did type it into a map search but nothing came up for it. Pat [suffolk]

    2. Hi Pat As Jon has said, the correct spelling is EWER Common - it is still there today consisting of a small area of grass commonland off Park Road, Gosport at one end and leading to Mount Pleasant Rd at the other. It is in Alverstoke but the Marine Barracks at Forton were not there in 1820. The RMLI which occupied the Forton Barracks did not come into being until halfway through the 1800's. Are you connected to the Wylie family - famous naval painter? Linda & Tony

    3. Apologies for intruding, I've only just joined the list, my interest is in the Spanswick surname generally, its a very rare name, which "leaks" in and out of Hampshire from Berkshire and Wiltshire , any none IGI reference anyone comes across would be be gratefully received, from any time period. And just incase its of any remote interest I've just added some more Hampshire names to my Newpaper Index (which may have been posted on the list in the past). The Index can be accessed through the page below : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dutillieul/index.html Click on "Local Newspaper Index (excluding Windsor&Eton Express)" . Scroll down on Master Index to Alpha Search Its a bit primitive, and quite big (almost 49,000 names), so it may take a little while to load (main Hampshire sources are Salisbury and Winchester Journal and some Hampshire Chronicle). 3. Hi list I have just discovered another bad transcription error on the ancestry 1861 census which might affect a search that some listers do. In quite a number of cases where the enumerator has put "Do" for ditto in the county name in Place of Birth, the transcribers have read this as Dorset!!!!!!!!! I dont know whether this applies for every instance of "Do", but to date I have found 5 separate instances. HTH someone Sandra

I am a descendant of her daughter Jane (who is also referred to as Jane Arndel) who married William Hebbard. That's the good news. The bad news is that I haven't managed to get any further back than William and Rebecca. Thanks to your e-mail I now know Rebecca's first name. If you have any information on their children (I have Jane, James, Eliza and Henry on my list) I would appreciate receiving it.
