    3. Thanks Richard The Bevois article was written by one of our listers Vicki Turner who works for the Southampton Museums Service and has easy access to the information. Not sure about the skeleton but they have just completed a dig near the Guildhall in the square between what was C&A's and the University building, they thought they would find some medieaval stuff but only came across some unopened bottles of WWI beer!!! 3. Just to say I really enjoyed the link, I often get down to Southampton, and I came across a report of a skeleton being dug up when working through the Salisbury and Winchester Journal (in which Southampton almost always features) , would this refer to the same legend or another story ? "A great deal has been said and written about St.Beavis of Southampton, and his giant page, Iscapar, and the existence of these personages has been treated as a fable, although their effigies are placed at the bar-gate. Yet we are informed, from a source entitled to some credit, that at the time General Stibert was proprietor of Beavis Hill, a skeleton was found at the above place, by James Landy, who is now upwards of 100 years of age, the head of which skeleton was described, as being four times the usual size, and the body proportioned." 3. David, thank you for the information regarding the origin of Bivois/Bevois Street. I obtained the spelling from a birth certificate dated April 1844. In the When and Where Born column it looks like 68 Bivois Street, Saint Mary, Southampton. In the Informant column it looks like 68 Bevois Street, Saint Mary, Southampton. However, as I mentioned, I did check the address on the 1841 census and it looked to me like Bivois Street. Then I used Autoroute to check what is there today and indeed, as you say, there is Bevois Valley Road and Bevois Gardens, both in Southampton. Thank you for helping me to clear this up. I am still asking for anyone who has these names in their tree, particularly SHAVE, as I hardly have any information on that family. The IGI has loads of SHAVE families in that area, so at some stage I must look at the parish records for Southampton to try to find more members of this SHAVE family. Happy Hunting! Lin Herts

    3. Dear Linda, in the 1720s the Earl of Peterborough built a mansion on his estate between Southampton Common and Portswood Park, and called it Bevis Mount (after the popular Mediaeval hero 'Sir Bevis of Hampton'); the lower part of the estate by the River Itchen later became known as Bevis Valley (mis-spelt even later as Bevois; the mis-spelling has prevailed). Bevis Valley was developed 1852-67 when the estate was broken up, and the south-west part of the estate was named Bevois Town. The 'long road' would probably be Bevois Valley Road (which runs north from Mount Pleasant Road to Portswood Park). The Earl is still comemorated in Peterborough Road, Bevois Town. I can only assume the enumerator was not a local man if he spelt it Bivois (Googling for Bivois gives no results) - however it is interesting that the 1841 Census was taken ten years before the redevelopment is supposed to have taken place - does this mean that 'Bivois Street' was inhabited by the earl's estate workers? It may have been renamed from Street to Road ('street' has connotations of 'built-up area' which the developers might seek to avoid) or, if it did not suit, disappeared under the housing estates. Regards, David

    3. Reposting my interests in Hampshire. James CORBIN married Harriet SHAVE IGI has a marriage for this couple 04 APR 1811 Christchurch, Hampshire Is anyone else researching this name? Interested in the family of Harriet SHAVE and any siblings of James CORBIN who was a farm bailiff in the Christchurch area. William BUDGE married (not sure when/where ceremony took place) Ann PRIOR. This couple had two children Mary Jane born 1844 and Charles born 1846, both in Southampton. I think William was a ship's painter. I can find no record of a marriage between William/Ann either in Pallots/IGI/civil records. My only hope is parish records I think. Mary Jane Budge was born 11/4/1844 at 68 Bivois Street, Saint Mary, Southampton. I have checked Bivois Street on the 1841 census but no luck. Also scoured St Mary's and All Saints parishes in 1841 to find PRIOR/BUDGE names but no luck. Are there any indexes for other Southampton parishes on the 1841? I think Ann Budge died 1849 in Poplar and William BUDGE turns up on the 1851 Census, with a new wife/partner called Caroline - as follows: 107/1554 folio 611r All Saints, Poplar at 4 South Street, St Ann's Limehouse, Tower Hamlets William Budge, head, 38, painter & glazier, born Yealmpton, Devon Caroline Budge, wife, 36 born Poplar Mary J Budge, dau, 7, scholar born Southampton, Hants Charles Budge, son, 5, scholar born Southampton, Hants Anyone with interest in these surnames, please contact me, maybe we can exchange information.
