    1. ELLIS in Netley
    2. Caroline Bradford
    3. Dear All I am new to this list, having inhabited the London one for some time now. I have (at last!) located some of my ELLIS ancestors in Netley in 1861. I believe they moved there sometime before 1851 and was wondering if anyone had access to an index for the 1851 census for that area and could have a look for them. The family should be headed by Samuel ELLIS (b. Swanage, Dorset circa 1811), wife Frances (b. Herts circa 1811) and possibly children Charles, George, Mary, Francis and William. Many thanks, Caroline

    1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] Kelly's for Ringwood
    2. David DOWD
    3. Hi Bob, the SS Parramatta was of 4,771 gross register tons, was 420 ft. long and 43 ft. in beam; it was used by the P & O (Peninsula and Oriental Steam navigation Co., of London), presumably for their Australia service. Retirement for one so young? Obviously, I don't know, but Ringwood was inconveniently far from Southampton in those days for him not to be retired. He could, I suppose, have found work at Christchurch harbour, down the River Avon - a bit of a come-down, though. The 1901 Census is the latest available but is very likely too early as the ship wasn't scrapped until 1903. Regards, David

    1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] Kelly's for Ringwood
    2. David you are a marvel been trying to find that ship for ages, I'm very impressed. I wonder if he retired when his ship was broken up, he would have been 47 then, a bit young I would have thought. His wife was quite a bit younger than him 22 years in fact so presumably she will be the owner at a later date. 3. Hi Bob, no, I'm afraid Kelly's doesn't go into that sort of detail unless you're a nob. Alfred presumably named his retirement house after his ship, the S.S. Parramatta, built in 1882 at Yard 226 by Caird & Co., Greenock, Clyde and registered in London. It was scrapped in 1903, hence his retirement? The ship named obviously after Sydney's river. Poulner is quite a large area so I'm afraid this is not very helpful. No other directory threw up Parramatta as an address. Regards, David

    3. Hi Bob, Kelly's for 1911 (the nearest one I have access to) states under private residents: Cocker, Alfred, living at Parramatta (no mention of occupation) for Poulner, which is Ringwood's northern suburb. For some reason (maybe the large lake system to its north), Poulner attracted a number of retired naval types then. Regards, David

    3. LOL! And my TATEs escaped FROM East End! Actually, I don't have DINES in my ancestry tree -- what I have is TATE. My ggggrandfather, HENRY TATE, started a 2nd family (new wife) in 1871, had one daughter, EDITH. (His son from 1st marriage is my gggrandfather). His daughter, EDITH TATE, married FRANK TOMS. They had a daughter in approx. 1898, EDITH TOMS. She would be the granddaughter of my ggggranfather, and I believe she married a GEORGE DINES in the early 1900s. I would love to find some living distant rellies (distant 1/2 cousins) in the UK. But I know nothing of the DINES family.
