    1. TILLER in 1851 in Southampton
    2. EDWARD A SCRIVEN
    3. Hi, everyone. On 7 Dec 1863 Thomas John GARDNER married Mary Ann TILLER in Cardiff in Glamorgan, Wales. The marriage certificate says Mary Ann's father was Walter TILLER deceased. He was a ship's carpenter. Mary Ann is listed as being 21, so that would mean a birth around 1842. In another record in our family she said she was born in February of 1846 in Southampton, Hampshire. That would make her 17 when she married. John was listed as 20 on the certificate, but we have his birth certificate, and he was only 17 in 1863, as he was born 19 Feb 1846. I think Walter was even deceased by 1861, as I cannot find him on the census. I am trying TILLER, TILER, TILLOR, TILLAR, and TYLER. I wonder if anyone has access to an index of the 1851 Census who might be able to find a family of a Walter TILLER (or any such variation) in or around Southampton with a Mary Ann with an age that would fit a birth around 1842-1846. Maybe I can find at least her mother's 1st name and use that to help find when and where Mary Ann was born and when and where her parents married. Thanks to any and all who can help. Ed Scriven

    1. Does anyone hav any suggestions?
    2. J P NIXEY
    3. Hi listers, I have details of a "family" in the 1861 census, but I'm somewhat bemused by the fact that the "family" is split in three. the widowed mother, Elizabeth harvey, is working as a cook at St John's vicarage, Forton, Gosport, while 3 of her children aged 10 (Charlotte), 8 (George) and 5 (William), are at the South Stoneham Union workhouse. A 4th child, aged 12 (Elisha), is living with an aunt at Millbrook, Southampton. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this may have been the case? In 1864 and 1868, Elizabeth has 2 more children, and in 1871is recorded as Elizabeth Hardy, wife of Charles Hardy. There is no sign of the daughter Ann born 1864, only amelia born 1868. Ann is found with her brother William in the 1881 census though. This all seems like a very odd set of circumstances to me, so any suggestions that may explain all this would be gratefully appreciated. regards to all, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
