    3. Bazellegette was the builder of the London sewers. He also set in train a descendant who gave us TV programmes such as "watching paint dry" or home make-overs. You ex-pompeyites must have heard of the Block Factory in Portsmouth, the worlds first automatic manufacturing plant in the worlds largest industrial site. It gave the sailing ships there thousands of blocks for hoisting every thing from a barrel of beer to a mast. 3. Hi list, The thread about Isambard Brunel, made me think of other famous Hampshire sons who listers may not realise were born in the county. One such is the pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais. Although from a Jersey family (to whom I am distantly related - a gggggrandmother was Mary Millais of Jersey), John Everett Millais was actually born in Southampton. For those who are perhaps unfamiliar with the name, two of his most famous paintings are "Bubbles" with a small boy in blue velvet gazing at bubbles in the air, and another with an old pirate-like sea-dog talking to two small boys on a beach and pointing out to sea. Of all the thousands of relations I have identified on my family tree - he is the closest I can come to a "claim to fame"! Regards Sandra

    3. Marc Isambard Brunel built the Thames Tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping: I think that was featured in a TV programme - I seem to remember a banquet being held in it! He also developed mechanical ships blocks (pulleys), which he installed in Portsmouth Dockyard (was that what he was doing in Portsmouth when Isambard Kingdom was born?). 3. Dear Angie, the BUBB family are of long standing hereabouts: BUBB, Joseph, tenanted Bubb's House with garden near Wood Common, Langley Fawley, 1792 BUBB, Joseph, publican, (not sure whether of 'The Ship' or 'The Jolly Sailor' - probably the latter [still there]) Lepe, Exbury, 1792 BUBB, Winifred, became Mrs. Saunders and attended the laying of the foundation stone of Blackfield's second Baptist Chapel, Hampton Lane, in 1938. There are still numerous Bubbs living locally (Blackfield, Holbury, and farther afield at Eastleigh, New Milton and Thornhill [Southampton]) I don't have the 1851, only the 1861 Census (when Exbury still came under Fawley), but for that: Exbury: BUBB, Ann, wife of Thomas (sched. 33), aged 56, born Beaulieu BUBB, Ann, wife of Charles (sched. 38), aged 50, born Beaulieu BUBB, Charles, head (sched. 32), aged 29, brickmaker, born Exbury BUBB, Charles, head (sched. 38), aged 57, dairyman, born Exbury BUBB, Edward, son of Charles (sched. 38), aged 7, scholar, born Exbury BUBB, Emily, dtr. of Thomas senior (sched. 33), aged 11, scholar, born Exbury BUBB, George, son of Thomas senior (sched. 33), aged 14, general labourer, born Exbury BUBB, James, grandson of Thomas senior (sched. 33), aged 11, farm boy, born Eling BUBB, James (possibly, though looks more like Jenner), son of Charles (sched. 38), aged 15, agricultural labourer, born Exbury BUBB, John, son of Charles (sched. 38), aged 11, farm boy, born Exbury BUBB, Joseph, head (sched. 54), aged 55, general labourere, born Exbury BUBB, Kate, dtr. of Charles (sched. 38), aged 9, scholar, born Exbury BUBB, Mary, (sched. 30), live-in servant (under-nurse) to Bartlett household, aged 13, born Exbury BUBB, Sarah, wife of Charles (sched. 32), aged 23, born Exbury BUBB, Thomas senior, head (sched. 33), aged 57, garden labourer (probably to Exbury gardens), born Exbury BUBB, Thomas junior, son of Thomas senior (sched. 33), aged 16, general labourer, born Exbury Lepe (which came under Exbury even when that came under Fawley) BUBB, William, widower aged 28, fisherman, aboard the 'Alice' at Lepe (witnessed by chief officer of the coastguard) Blacklands Farm (Exbury) BUBB, Henry, servant to Soffe family (sched. 72), aged 19, ag. lab., born Exbury Regards, David

    2. Melanie Tucker
    3. Does anyone have access to the 1841 or 1851 census records for Andover who could do a lookup for me? I've just found out my ancestor, John Callow, lived in Andover, Hampshire, and worked as a shoemaker before joining the army and going to India 1843. He was born around 29 Nov. 1822 (calculated from death certificate). John should be on the 1841 census since he didn't go to India until 1843, and his family might still be listed on the 1851 Andover census. Hi everyone, If there is anyone trawling through the 1841 census of Hants, particularly Portsea, Fareham and Gosport areas, could they please keep an eye open for a George Allberry/Aldbury/Aubery/Aubrey/Albury/Albray etc etc? Believed to have been born outside the county, and more than likely working as a Labourer. Marital status unknown, and aged around 43 in real terms (going by his age given on the 1851 census).
