    1. John GALLIENNE
    2. Would like some help trying to find a missing ancestor and solving a mystery. John GALLIENNE b abt 1862 Alverstoke to Thomas Henry GALLIENNE & Ellen (nee RILEY) I have after tracking him down on an 1871 Census living with his Grandmother Mary Burgess nee Riley nee unknown maiden name and his sister Ellen Mary. Why it was difficult was there were a few transcription errors e.go born in Germany, parish of Alverstoke and his sister listed as a grandson. I know the history of his sister who was an idiot from birth and ended up in the workhouse and eventually Knowle hospital where she died. But was John also living there because there was something wrong with him also. I cannot find any trace of him or his grandmother after that perhaps she died 1882. Also strange is in this census he is listed as being born Guernsey on the image ( hence the transcribing as Germany), when in fact his parents were married in Alverstoke 1860. I know that his father was born in Guernsey but I can't see them going back there just to have a baby. Perhaps another error. Any help would be really welcome. Kind regards Bob Newell

    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. Hi List, For the benefit of anyone who isnt aware of the following site... The London Gazette was the official puiblication for listing casualties, promotions and awards for the armed services. It is particularly good for WW1 and WW2 casualties. In addition it lists promotions and examination results for the Civil Service, including the post office; honours lists; examination results for the legal and medical professions; university graduations; bankruptcies. Even if your ancestor was a mere lowly temporary postman, he may well appear in the gazette. A successful search will take you to the actual page of the gazette where the information appeared. The free searchable archive for records since 1900 can be found at: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk Hope someone finds it useful Kind regards Sandra

    1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] new web site - Military genealogy
    2. Dave Jacobs
    3. I just did a short check on a few WWI family victims. Obviously it does not contain any Naval information, being purely Military. But although it says 'every regiment and corps of the British Army', it does not appear to include the RFC, which was an Army Corps until April 1918. Obviously by 1921 when this list was created, the RFC was considered to be the RAF, and so not covered. All services are of course in the CWGC website. Cheers, Dave Jacobs ================ At 23:04 30/08/2005, you wrote: >Thanks Sandra >That will save me having a proper look!! 3. Hate to disagree with you Linda and Tony, but I think you might be thinking of the IGI on CD. I understood that the online version would be updated regularly, from their web-site: "# Regular updates. The index will be updated as new information is received. Note: There are no current plans to update the International Genealogical Index on compact disc." I have noticed the odd new entry when I have ploughed through and compared information. I was just wondering if there was an easier way of doing this.
