Thanks for the offer but no Archie on my list as yet. Rose
Toni, Just a thought, Bournemouth Central Library has the Daily Echo, Graphic, and Guardian (all post 1920). So it might be worth a telephone call (or possibly there is an email contact on the web) to see exactly what they hold and if the library can help. My grandmother, Muriel Alice Hutchins, was crowned Miss Bournemouth in, I believe, 1933. Her portrait was displayed in a photographer's shop window. My grandfather saw the picture, fell in love with it, and asked the photographer who it was and how he could meet her. So began the saga culminating in my 42 year old, married father of 2, grandfather disappearing without trace from the lives of his family. He subsequently had 6 children with Miss Bournemouth, I am a descendant of this 2nd relationship. Incidentally, 68 years later, I had the opportunity to tell grandfather's oldest son what had become of his beloved father. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can find out more about Miss Bournemouth 1933 and locate the photographer? I guess the obvious answer is the local paper, but what paper, can it be narrowed down to a particular month, would it be likely to tell me the photographer and how do I access this information when not in Hampshire? The portrait was a painting which had been done from the official photo of Miss Bournemouth. I'd like to find out if the painting still exists anywhere, the family have just a photo and not the painting, but where do I start? Regards Toni

No problem Rose Had a copy of the friends book given us and there are quite a few names in N Stoneham that appear in it. Mostly old football teams and school photos, but some of the families outside their houses. Hi Rose Have you by any chance got EMERY's in North Stoneham as well as South? The reason I ask is I was looking through a book written by a friend of ours about North Stoneham and there is an Archie EMERY featured there c 1949 in a photo of the Darts Club Outing from the Cricketers pub in North Stoneham. If it is let me know and I will scan the photo for you. I have not got a birth Certificate but this is what is listed in the 1871 Census when he is living with his Grandmother. The parents worked and lived in Alverstoke till their deaths and all their other children were born in Alverstoke. I think it is just one of those disappearing children, perhaps he died. One thought, about the comment 'going back there just to have a baby'. I would guess the marriage was in Alverstoke in 1860 because that was where the bride's family lived. Where they would live subsequently would be where the groom worked. I can't see offhand why that could not be Guernsey, especially if the groom had family connections there. Of course, if you have that 1862 birth cert saying Alverstoke there's nothing more to be said, and I apologise for sticking my oar in!
