Hi Jon, What a disappointment! Never mind, it was worth following up - another lead to cross off the list. Hi Sandra Just thought I'd say I finally managed to get on to the NA docs page with George Parsons, downloaded the image, got it transcribed, and found he was born 1824, not joined up 1824, so it isn't him. lol. Never mind, the search goes on yet again ... happy days! lol Kind regards, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Hello Bob I have Catchpoles from Colchester. Did yours stray across the borders? regards June in Edinburgh
Hello List: I am wondering if there is a Hampshire gazetteer in book format or one that specifically covers southern Hampshire for purchase. I realize that there are excellent gazetteers online and also maps, and these have helped me a great deal so far, but I need the big picture showing all of Hants. or specifically the South. I'd appreciate any recommendations. My surnames and areas of interest are: Martin - Fareham Kitchen - Eling, Portsea Powell - Wymering Bendell/Bendal - Eling, Portsea Rampton - Whitchurch Fleet - Titchfield I would love to hear from anyone with connections, although my research is full of holes at the moment! I have a lot of work to do... Regards, Eve Jankowicz USA

Hi Bob I have an ancestor named RILEY but I do not know where he was born - and that was way back in 1700's. His wife Susannah (Nairn ) was convicted in London and transported to Port Jackson 1792. Do any of your Rileys have a connection with London. I am researching the HANDS family. William HANDS born c1820 was said to be a native of Lymington. His father was also William, a farmer and he had a brother, Henry. In the past I have had success in locating family forebears in England through parish records and I am wondering if this would be a possibility in Lymington. With thanks, Margery (NSW Australia)
Hello Listers I now know that St Peter and St Paul's church in Fareham was, apart from a small part, rebuilt in brick in 1812. Can anyone point me to a sketch of the pre-1812 church please? My Fareham ancestors were baptised, married and buried in the 1600s so the brick church doesn't fit them. Many thanks. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

The numbers 117 and 118 are the Schedule Numbers and not house numbers in King Street. The // symbol next to Caroline's name indicates that she is in the same house as Mary A Goodfellow but as she is also described as "Head" one can only assume that she had her own part of the house and is not part of the Goodfellow household. This is confirmed by the single slash (/) next to William H(W)ayman and further by the Do.....Do and the '1' for Inhabited not appearing until the next house (George Bennet). Regards, Terry

Hi Alan, The idea of Bps being mistaken as Pops really does look possible doesn't it. I'm not sure where the address details of the deceased would be obtained from. I seem to have a recollection that it very much depended on information provided by the relatives of the deceased and this in some instances can explain why so little information is available. In this instance I appear to have been a lot luckier than many with the amount of information I have been provided with via the CWGC. Thanks again, Alan Siddorn, Irby, Wirral. ---------- From: "Alan McGowan" <mcgoa@lineone.net> To: <HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 9:01 PM Subject: Re: [Ham] Pops Waltham If the writing is lower case, it could be a misreading of Bps Waltham.

Hi everyone, I wonder if someone can help me with a census entry from 1861 at Gosport please? The details I have are: King Street, Alverstoke, Gosport. Mary A Goodfellow, Head, Married, b1829 (32) Fishbourne, Hants., Beerhouse Keeper; William Gates, Brother, Unmarried, b1839 (22) Fishbourne, Hants., Carpenter; Emma Gates, Niece, Unmarried, b1843 (18) Fishbourne, Hants., Servant; James Purkis, Lodger, Unmarried, b1825 (36) not known, Labourer; William Hayman, Lodger, Married, b1801 (60) Sussex, Plasterer; Caroline Alderey, Head, Unmarried, b1832 (29) Petersfield, Laundress. Should Caroline be in a household on her own, maybe next door, or is she correctly placed in the household of Mary, but as her own boss so to speak?
