I have been away from this list for several months, as I have been trying to make some inroads into my own family from Northants, and Buckinghamshire. I have recently found a few new links to my husbands family, so again find myself returning to this this great list, hoping that someone will be able to assist with any of the following names. Edwin Poore, son of Eli Poore, married Frances Ellen Hammerton South Stoneham 1899, Children from this marriage were Geoffrey Eli 1902 , Reverdy 1904, Edwin and Mary. Agnes Poore daughter of Eli Poore married ? Arthur Herbert Poore 1880, son of Eli Poore, married Hannah Louisa? and had 2 children that I am aware of Violet, and Leonard Arthur, who became a priest and for many years worked in the diocese of Hull Yorks, and not sure if he ever returned to Southampton. Would love to here from anyone who may recognise any of these names. regards Shelia Poore South Australia

Hi Shelia, I am descended from the South Stoneham HAMMERTONS. I'm not sure where Frances fits in but am sure we must be related. Do you have any more info about Frances? Look forward to hearing from you. Hello I would like to thank everyone who replied with their help on my query regarding Albert Edward GORDON, Sara, Chris and Alan. I received Albert's birth certificate this morning, and he was registered as Albert Edward LUDWIG, (mother's surname) born 22nd March 1882, no father named unfortunately. Thanks to Sara's help and all the information she sent I was able to find Albert's death, aged 93, in 1975, in Bournemouth. His DOB was given so this confirms that I have found the right one. Also because Sara found the names of his wife on the voter's register, I have been able to find his marriage, her surname PEACH was on the IOW BMD register for a Leonard Francis Gordon's birth, their son born in 1911. So I was able to find a PEACH/GORDON marriage in 1906. Plus Leonard's death in 1987 with his full DOB. Last week I didn't know anything about this family and I am so grateful to everyone for their help. Many thanks. Regards Ally (Derby)

In all census years, each Sub-District is divided into Enumeration Districts. An Enumeration District may cover a whole parish or part of a parish, depending on population. For 1861, within East Meon Sub-District, Froxfield is covered by Enumeration District 5 (17 pages) and Enumeration District 6 (13 pages). The part of the parish covered by each Enumeration District is described at the front of the return for that district, i.e. on folio 46 for ED5 and folio 58 for ED6. I was looking at the 1861 census returns for Froxfield on Ancestry.com and thought it would be a good idea to download them all of which there were 13 of them. The following day I was doing another lookup online and it came up with a census return for one that was not in the 13 I had printed off. I looked at them further and noticed that there was different set of 17 as well. The question is, was there two enumerators going around Froxfield doing two different halves or something like that. Does this happen a lot for other areas in the 1861 census and does it happen at all for any other years censuses? Any help on this would be appreciated. Hi everyone, Well that did not take long! My wife and I went shopping for a couple of hours, and my question was answered by several people (some for some reason with duplicate messages.) Anyway, many thanks to you all for your replies, including Jean in Hampshire who even sent me all the information I was looking for. By the way, the person who's death certificate I received was my great grand uncle, Charles Frederick GARDINER, age 31, born Fareham, Hants. He apparently never married, and was a banker's clerk, and met a strange death at the Sussex County Hospital. He died, according to the death certificate, of 'Stricture of the urethra, alcoholism, and pyaemia (septicaemia).' I guess the alcohol at least killed some of the pain he must have suffered. His brother notified the register office of his death, but for some reason said he was his uncle! Must have been embarrassed by the 'alcoholism' bit! The GARDINER family were a queer bunch, I cannot find neither birth or baptism records for any of them, The mother; Mary, and presumably the father; John, came from Leicester. The first three children were all born there between 1830 and 1833. One of them was my great grandmother. Three other children were then born in; Lambeth, Gosport, and Fareham. The father; John, was an agent for the London & South Western Railway, the eldest son also worked for the railway, and became the Station Master at Basingstoke in 1871, then Superintendent at Battersea. The second son also worked for the London & South Western, and ended up as an accountant for them at Bath. In the same batch of mail was a letter about the London and Paris Hotel in Newhaven. Apparently the hotel belonged to the the same railway! Amazing what you discover on the Lists! I'm still hoping someone will have the 1851 census of Fareham, or an index. That should give me the father's place of birth and tell me what he was doing at that time. Have not been able to find a birth registration for Charles as yet. I bet they never registered him! Regards to you all from Quebec, dull overcast and rain forecast for the week-end. Dave.

Oh Dave, I think that you may have hit the nail on the head! Being an Antipodean my knowledge of geography in your country is fairly abysmal. There is anecdotal family evidence of a Birmingham connection so I will follow up on the Leamington Spa suggestion. Many thanks, Margery

But I would like to see where he was really living, who's there, what sort of place, etc. It's actually 27 Duke St. Brighton. Grateful for any help.
