Hi Jean I just looked at the 1861 image, and it is the list of sailors etc based at the shore station of HMS Victory, Portsmouth Dockyard. Although the ship itself was still in existence (and it still is) it was in a permanent dock there. This base was used to hold men who were not at the time assigned to another ship. There is no reference to Anglesey in the image, although you are right that is it mentioned in the transcript. This is plainly wrong, and I can only think it is an error by the transcribers. Regarding his marriage, this from FreeBMD may be him: ---------- Marriages Sep 1855 ---------- Arstall John <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi//cgi/districts.pl?r=16993704&d=bmd_1126009863>Stockport 8a <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl?vol=8a&page=19&type=MARRIAGES&start=1855&sq=3&end=1855&eq=3&v=MTEyNzgxODU0NjoyOTE3ZTM5MmU2Yzc3NWM1NGZiNDFlY2MzNGM3NWI3NDc4MmNiMWUw&jsexec=1&mono=0&action=Find>19 <http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=16993704&d=bmd_1126009863&scan=1> Scan available - click to view Bowker Thomas <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi//cgi/districts.pl?r=16999447&d=bmd_1126009863>Stockport 8a <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl?vol=8a&page=19&type=MARRIAGES&start=1855&sq=3&end=1855&eq=3&v=MTEyNzgxODU0NjoyOTE3ZTM5MmU2Yzc3NWM1NGZiNDFlY2MzNGM3NWI3NDc4MmNiMWUw&jsexec=1&mono=0&action=Find>19 <http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=16999447&d=bmd_1126009863&scan=1> Scan available - click to view Ogden Sarah <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi//cgi/districts.pl?r=17041520&d=bmd_1126009863>Stockport 8a <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl?vol=8a&page=19&type=MARRIAGES&start=1855&sq=3&end=1855&eq=3&v=MTEyNzgxODU0NjoyOTE3ZTM5MmU2Yzc3NWM1NGZiNDFlY2MzNGM3NWI3NDc4MmNiMWUw&jsexec=1&mono=0&action=Find>19 <http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=17041520&d=bmd_1126009863&scan=1> Scan available - click to view Platts Hannah Maria <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi//cgi/districts.pl?r=17044788&d=bmd_1126009863>Stockport 8a <http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl?vol=8a&page=19&type=MARRIAGES&start=1855&sq=3&end=1855&eq=3&v=MTEyNzgxODU0NjoyOTE3ZTM5MmU2Yzc3NWM1NGZiNDFlY2MzNGM3NWI3NDc4MmNiMWUw&jsexec=1&mono=0&action=Find>19 <http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=17044788&d=bmd_1126009863&scan=1> Scan available - click to view =========== Of course this may be some other John Arstall, and your man's marriage may not be on FreeBMD yet. To find out whether this John's bride was Sarah or Hannah, I looked for both in the 1861 census, but without success. She should be alive somewhere, or John would have been a widower. But the name Arstall strikes me as one that could easily be garbled by a transcriber or indexer. Hello Ann & Terry, re: your blacksmith list, I have a Richard LAMBERT, born Beacon Hill Marchwood, July 7 1824, In 1851 he was a working blacksmith in Marchwood Parish, and by 1861 had risen to be a Smith & Horseshoe maker in Chichester Square, St Marys Southampton. Hope this is of interest, regards, Derek.
Good afternoon all, Recently I started indexing Blacksmiths. This I did not advertise the website as I already have about 2 thousand names from the Devon 1851 census and Hampshire census to index. takes a lot of work and as I work full time - it is done after hours and on weekends. However, someone has leaked the news before I was ready and I am now getting many emails complaining that they can't open the Hampshire Link. The link is working but there is only a couple of names in it at this stage. Please feel free to send me your ancestors information and I'll happily add them to the index - as soon as I possibly can. When the lists become too large I may look at making separate website for each Smith's Trade. Please read the long message before sending your information. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards Ann in Perth, Western Australia. **************************************************************************************************************************************** Hello Listers - Apologies to those who will see this repeated - on other lists. I have commenced an index called "Blacksmiths and Related Trades". This is available to browse on a Rootsweb Freepages site. I commenced the index with my own ancestors Thomas Briggs and Thomas Richards who were Blacksmiths, and lived in Blue Town and Sheerness Kent, along with William Baskett (Leading Shipwright) from the Isle of Wight and Sheerness...and its grown from there. A very kind person has already given me a list of blacksmiths from Devon (1851 Census) and these are currently being indexed. This site is still under construction and the design of the homepage will change from time to time as the site grows.... as will the way in which the surnames have been indexed. I may even end up with a different website for each area of Smithing but for the moment, The Blacksmiths Index will cover all. I am still looking for the appropriate gif.images to place on the links for each trade, so for the moment all links have the same image. I appreciate any names, associated / interesting stories about Blacksmiths, cartwrights, wheelwrights, shipwrights etc. from any County in England, Scotland and Wales to be included to this index. I am also happy to include Smiths from other European countries as many of our ancestors migrated between the UK and other countries, taking their trade with them. If you wish to send your ancestors details to be included on the website, please send their information in an easy to read style, eg: dot form. SURNAME: GIVENNAME: TRADE: BORN: DIED: WIFE: WORK PLACE: etc.etc.etc. please be specific about which County you wish your ancestor to be placed in. I am not familiar with all UK towns (I live down under), and as I work full time I'd rather not have to look up a map to find out which county a certain town belongs to. In the meantime I sincerely thank all those who have taken such an interest in my website and who have been so kind as to send me their ancestors details. Best wishes and TIA Ann in Australia tristar@mydesk.net.au Mad, mad person - indexing Smiths in general: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~blacksmiths
The index entry is as follows: 1851 Census Index - Bursledon - in Volume 14 of the index HO 107/1670 folio 95 Waller Thomas 73 - born Hamble Waller Sarah 69 - born Southampton A typed and indexed transcript of the Hamble (or Hamble le Rice) parish register up to about 1837 is available at Southampton City Archives, Hampshire Record Office, the Society of Genealogists, and the HGS Searchroom. The parish registers of Bursledon, Hamble and Hound intermix, and all should be consulted. The above record offices etc also hold transcripts of all the Southampton parish registers up to 1837. You may find a volunteer to do a look-up. The LDS has filmed these transcripts. Hampshire Record Office will sell you a print of the census page, but there is a minimum charge. Hello Dave > For some reason this family never seem to > have registered their children's births. Have you checked the variant spellings - GARDNER, GARDENER etc? Also sometimes the initial letter was hard to read and has been transcribed as something else. This goes for the whole name sometimes. One of my DANIEL rellies is transcribed in the 1881 Census as DRAINER! Same initial letter, but she was most elusive. A kind lister found her in the end by using a wildcard in her search. Re Fareham and South Stoneham, according to Parish Locator (downloadable free if you don't have it), the distance between the two is only 7.5 miles, so moving from one to the other wouldn't have been at all difficult. Cheers. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hi List; I'm so grateful to people on the list, particularly Alan Patricia Jill Lindia & Tony and Linda for all their help. I have been searching for the Wallers for years. I recently heard from a cousin in South Africa and between the two of us we probably will track him down. We have exchanged a lot information to date and hope to exchange more in the future. Pat
Would 14 be the Schedule number
14 Burledon is without doubt a mistranscription for Volume 14 of the HGS 1851 census index. This inludes Bursledon. Linda & Tony

Hi everyone, I am looking for George WEST from TADLEY. I have him in 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871 census records. It gets difficult to locate him any earlier at present. He was born about 1849 or 1850. From his first marriage to Mary Ann HERBERT in 1867 his father is David WEST he is given as of age! In his second marriage in 1877 to Emily SALMON his father is given as Daniel WEST. I cannot with any certainty locate him in the 1861 census in Tadley or elsewhere. All the later census records show him around the Lambeth, Norwood and Croydon areas. If someone could locate him in the 1851 census, hopfully still in the Tadley area aged about 1 or 2 with a father of Daniel or David, it could help clear up a problem with the 1861 census. Barry.
