    3. Andrew, You don't say where they were living in 1871, or what birthplaces are given in the census. The marriage could have taken place any time from the 1840s up to 1865. There could have been older children who were living elsewhere. It also depends what you mean by "all online resources". Family Search is unlikely to help, as coverage of Hampshire is patchy. FreeBMD is useful but incomplete. A search for the marriage in the GRO indexes would be lengthy, and would not necessarily find the right one unless you find Jane's maiden name. An obvious step would be to find Jane's maiden name by buying the birth certificate of one of the children. Have you tried to find one or both of them in the 1861 and 1851 census returns? Have you looked for John's baptism? If the marriage is likely to have taken place in Southampton, you could request a look-up in the card index at Southampton City Archives, which includes CMB for most Southampton parishes up to the 1870s or later. I have John OSMAN (age 44) on the 1871 census married to Jane M. OSMAN (39) with 2 children, Alice J. OSMAN (6) and Mary L. OSMAN (3). I've been trying to find a marriage for John and Jane using all online resources I know of and have drawn a blank. 2. PMR
    3. Hello Listers For some time I've been trying to find out more about John ROBINS, my 8 x ggf, and his sons John and Thomas, my 7 x ggf. I've checked the Alverstoke PRs (where their burials are recorded) but couldn't find John snr's marriage to my 8 x ggm or to his second wife Alice, nor the baptism of either of his sons. Their names are known from his Will. Today on the IGI I found the baptisms of a John and a Thomas in 1636 and 1638 respectively - dates that fit later events for these guys - baptised to John and Philippa in Exeter. As John snr's Will indicates that he was a seaman as were his sons - he willed his boats to them - would it be likely for sea-faring men to travel so far and relocate? This came to mind as a possibility from reading the story of Francis Drake. The book mentions that he moved from Devon to Kent (more than twice the distance from Exeter to Portsmouth) then back again - and about a century earlier. Would such a move be at all likely? Many thanks Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    3. I have found an ancestor's navy record saying his period of service was from 1 Jan 1871 to 3 April 1874, when he was discharged. I have found him on the 1871 census on a RN ship in Zanzibar. Having read the notes on searching the records I understand that if he entered service before 1873 there will be an additional service record in ADM 139. Could someone tell me if these records are likely to give me any further information. Many thanks. Kathryn

    3. Ratings refer to the ordinary man compared to the Officers and Warrant Officers. Off Steware 2c and Off Std I probably means Officers Steward Class 2 and Class 1 Li "paying off" normally refers to Merchant Navy when a chap leaves a ship he is given his final pay. List No could mean the Number of the ship in some record or other. RMG means Recommended for Medal and Gratuity. My grandmother, Edith Avis(nee Colley), told my mother that her father, William Henry Colley used to carve the horses for Simmonds Carousal. Two of them just fitted into the front room of their home. He also made the first travelling live-in van for Barnham & Bailey. The Simmonds Company was in Scotland when something went wrong with a piece of equipment so they wrote to the firm William Henry Colley worked for requesting that he travelled to Scotland to carry out the repair. However the firm for which Willam Colley worked sent another employee. On arrival in Scotland this employee was asked who he was and promptly sent back with the message that they wanted the services of William Colley. Best wishes, Marilyn
