I haven't been receiving mail from the list for the past day or two. Is there a problem? Pat
Hello Listers, Please could some kind soul look up the 1841 census for John Groves born about 1806 on Isle of Wight, is possibly the son of John and Mary Groves born in Whippingham, Newchurch or Newport IOW, England. John's Groves born abt 1806 occupation could be a Shipwright? All I know is that John Groves married Mary Ann Vinson 10 Apr 1846 at Whippingham. John Groves Died in 1847 leaving Mary with a daughter Jane Ann Groves born 1847 and possibly pregnant with their son James Henry Groves who was born Early 1848 in East Cowes, IOW. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves
The birth certificate for the George WEST born '09/01/1850 union workhouse Kingsclere'. Has the name and surname of father blank. The informant is - 'George GETHIN master of the union workhouse' . Mother is Sarah WEST. I was begining to think that the this Sarah WEST is the one who marries John ANGLES (ANGLAS in the free BDM's) in 1855. The ages of :- Sarah WEST born 1823 with father David and Sarah ANGLES in the 1861 census with a nephew George WEST. (she is given as aged 30) are not very close. The Marriage certificate for Sarah WEST and John ANGLES has been ordered to find out the father of this Sarah. The other problem is the occupation for David WEST on the first marriage of George WEST in 1867 - Carman. The occupation of David WEST father of Sarah would be ineresting to find out from the 1851 census. Also is he the David WEST that you found in the BDM's as died 1852? If he is he could not have brought up George as his own! Barry Andrews

Thank you all for your help, Further information about George WEST from Tadley born about 1850. On his first marriage his father is listed as David WEST at his second marriage his father is listed as Daniel SALMON Does this help or hinder finding the correct George WEST? Barry Andrews
I wonder if anyine could help. In 1861 there is a George WEST aged 10 anda nephew, living with John ANGLES aged 25 and Sarah ANGLES aged 30 living in what looks like 'Bread Half Penny' Tadley. Is it possible for a location of a marriage for these two and a 1851 Census look up for them please. Barry Andrews
I wonder if anyone can help. I am looking for George WEST, my Greatgreat grandfather, born in Tadley (according to later census info from 1871, 1881,1891 and 1901). I have yet to locate him positively in the 1861 Census. The all later census info puts him as born about 1849-50. If that is true then he married at age 17-18 in 1867, the certificate states he is of age! Any George WEST born between 1840 and 1850 could now be a possibility and living in the Tadley area. The 1851 census info and, if possible, an electronic image would be very helpful. Barry Andrews
I wonder if anyone could help. Robert ANDREWS joined the 66th Berkshire regiment (also known as thr 66th Regiment of Foot) on 5th March 1841 in Gosport. Would he be on the census for that area? Barry Andrews
You will probably find this has been moved Patrick We had a similar tank plus other vehicles parked at the back of us at Totton but it was in the mid 50s that they were moved. I am trying to find out what happened in the 1850's to 2 of my gg uncles from Durley. One the 1851 Census Andrew (22) and William WINTER (20) are at Plymouth Citadel Barracks, Plymouth Devon in the military. There are a few other Durley lads on the list: Richard Gumbleton (22 - Upham) John S Knapp (22 - Durley) William Pavey (20 - Durley) Can any one throw any light on any of these lads and the reason they may have been signing up? the rest of the family were ag.labs. I am trying to find out what happened to Andrew and William as I cannot find them on later Census records. I suspect that they may have died during the course of their service. To date I have not been able to locate their deaths. I would really appreciate some help with this as locating them will almost complete this branch of the family for the 1800's. In case anyone is interested I have a list of the soldiers listed at Plymouth Citadel Barracks on the 1851 that originated from Hampshire, they were approx 150. Thanks Bev
Hello Colyn Many thanks for your very interesting and most informative message. I knew that surgeons were called Mr lbut I didn't know why - now I do, thanks to you. I'm glad to have Mary and Cath(erine)'s info for 1859. I've found Catherine's death in 1870 but Mary eludes me. She apparently died before 1881 as I can't find her on the Census. That's interesting about the Bishop's Licence for surgeons. James may have trained either in the Diocese of Portsmouth or over the border in the Diocese of Chichester. The family moved back and forth between the two places with great regularity!! His son, James Joseph, is listed as his Assistant in the 1841 Census, so maybe he was training under his father. He was 30 at the time (JJ that is not Dad!). I'll have to give some more thought to this issue. Cheers. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hi everyone Years ago in the 1960's my aunt and uncle lived in Aldershot. (My uncle was in the Canadian Army). They went back to Canada in the late 1960's. They had a gate in the fence at the back of their garden which led right into the woods. The wood contained the remains of a tank that me and my cousins would clamber all over. I think from memory it was a Sherman. I'm trying to locate whereabouts in Aldershot the tank in the woods is - and possibly the road that my aunt, uncle and cousins lived in. From memory I think it was in the area of Ash as I seem to remember that Mychett Lake was nearby. Any ideas? Regards Patrick (Bournemouth, Dorset)

Hello Marilyn and other listers The story of your ancestors carving horses for the Simmons Carousal and for Barnham & Bailey is great. I am keeping it to add to a couple of other stories and hope to make a LINK on my Blacksmiths homepage - for interesting stories. I'm not sure when I'll get that done.
