    3. Hi Linda and Tony, thank you for reply, John married Mary Brigden 1858, the Parish of St Paul Chatham, she is down as widow but with no former name, so don't know if Brigden is maiden name or first married name, her address is Whittaker Place Chatham. I have looked in all census but don't seem to be able to find her. The vessel that John was on "Fire Queen" Portsmouth Harbour. 3. Hello Jean There were two barracks at that time. The RM Artillery were at Southsea whereas the RM Light Infantry were at Forton Barracks, Gosport. There were married quarters but also many of the local houses were occupied by Marine families. There was a school within the Forton barracks for the children of Marines. You do not state John's wife's name or where they were married. Some wives stayed in their home towns whilst the men served away. By the way, John is not on the ship Portsmouth - but in the ships company in Portsmouth - HMS Victory Marine service records can be found at The National Archive, Kew Hope this helps Linda & Tony -----Original Message----- From: jean flanagan [mailto:jeancflanagan@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 08 October 2005 19:09 To: ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-HANTS] Where is marines wife Hi Listers, I'm trying to find the wife of John ARSTELL, he is on vessel Portsmouth 1861census, and Royal Marine Hospital Chatham Kent on 1871 he died 1874. 2. Barry Andrews
    3. I have found in the 1871 census Elener West abt 1852 Tadley, Hampshire, England Wife Tadley Hampshire George West abt 1851 Kingsclere, Hampshire, England Head Tadley Hampshire The free BDM gives this on one page:- FRANKUM Ellen Kingsclere 2c 460 SUMPTER James Kingsclere 2c 460 TULL Mary Kingsclere 2c 460 West George Kingsclere 2c 460 This is more likey to be the Baseborn George with Mother Sarah WEST born in the Union Workhouse at Kingsclere. My GGgrandfather is with my Ggrandmother in the 1871 census in Norwood. That still leaves trying to find My GGgrandfather George WEST. The 1871 gives - age 23 and born Hampshire The 1881 gives - age 32 and Hants, Tadley The 1891 gives - age 42 and Tadley Common, Hants the 1901 gives - age 51 and Hants, Tadley can any one locate him in 1851 or 1861. I believe the Nephew with the Angles in 1861 could be the George I found in the 1871 given above. Barry Andrews

Hi Patrick You might like to contact Aldershot military museum, I'm sure someone would remember. http://www.hants.gov.uk/museum/aldershot/ Regards Maureen ----- Original Message ----- From: Patrick Linsley To: ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 8:20 AM Subject: Aldershot - a tank in the woods Hi everyone Years ago in the 1960's my aunt and uncle lived in Aldershot. (My uncle was in the Canadian Army). They went back to Canada in the late 1960's. They had a gate in the fence at the back of their garden which led right into the woods. The wood contained the remains of a tank that me and my cousins would clamber all over. I think from memory it was a Sherman. I'm trying to locate whereabouts in Aldershot the tank in the woods is - and possibly the road that my aunt, uncle and cousins lived in. From memory I think it was in the area of Ash as I seem to remember that Mychett Lake was nearby. Any ideas? Regards Patrick (Bournemouth, Dorset) ______________________________

    3. Hi Shay, You are right on! C does signify a Chatham marine or rating. The other RN depots were Portsmouth, Devonport and Lee-on-Solent (Fleet Air Arm). At one time Fleet Air Arm numbers were prefixed with FAA, up until about 1945 I think. I joined up in 1944 and originally had a prefix of FAA, then it changed to 'L', before I was demobed in 1946. Regards, Dave in Quebec.

    3. Please, does anybody on the list know anything about Eric Arthur HILL, an engine room artificer HMS Mull of Kintyre at marriage, and Teresa Elizabeth HAYTER, shop assistant in ladies outfitters at marriage. They both gave the address of 30 Folkestone Road, Copnor and married 17 December 1952. I have searched the GRO for children from the marriage and found none. Teresa was born Portsmouth 1924 and I believe Eric was born Hampshire 1925. Anything about anything more than gratefully received! Thanks, Shay
