    3. Hi Kevin, Besides the Phillimore Hampshire Marriages which can be downloaded free from Genuki (some IOW parishes), the only other source I have found on CD at the Parish Register Transcription Society: http://www.prtsoc.org.uk/ They sell CD's of Transcriptions made by Hackman of the BT's (1780 onwards, but some missing years). You can buy the whole series or part series on CD. Quite useful although you need a bit of care with the missing years and bear in mind this is a transcription of a contempary copy of the parish registers - and they are NOT indexed so have to be searched manually. 3. Hi I am interested in locating people who had relatives that served in the Chinese Maritime Customs (CMC) or had other connections with the service. Whilst the CMC 'Outdoor Service' which included the equivalent of the UK Waterguard recruited principally from sailors and ex services of various nationalities who had found themselves in China, there was a brief attempt around 1913 to recruit from HM Customs. A small number of recruits went out to China but many left the CMC quite quickly as they found themselves over qualified for the what they were asked to do and found better paid jobs locally. Good Huntin' ;-) Trevor Tomasin Primarily researching - BANTON - BULL - COLLIS - LEAVERS - HOPKINS - MOODY - PURCHASE - TOMASIN - VINCENT - but always with an interest in derivatives, spouses and their siblings - and all part of 'The TOMASIN Family History Project' - www.tomasin.org.uk/genealogy Were your ancestors, or are your living relatives even, Customs Officers? 3. Hey Chris, Thanks! I have friends on board from Newport Beach, California, who have been sending messages for the last three months on their round the world cruise... perfect weather, calm seas all the way and they were very lucky. They were to board in NYC on Day 1 but changed to LA which is close to where we all live ~ and missed the flu outbreak ~ BUT someone was in their cabin as booked, so they were bumped up to about the highest category ... for free! What a sweet deal! The Southampton welcome will have to be really stellar to beat Sydney and Hong Kong ! I know they go to Windsor for the day tomorrow and then on to NYC. Anyone contemplating this southern route won't be disappointed and as I said, weather has been fabulous! A trip of a lifetime. 2. Philip Wray
    3. Ann, After checking the 1891 census, Albert appears to have been born in Berkshire, New Hinkey (sic) circa 1875. There is a listing of the birth of Albert Edward Wilkins at Abingdon, Berks Mar Qtr 1875. The Abingdon district includes the areas of North and South Hinksey. I note that when Albert married (Sept Qtr 1895) he married as Albert Edward Wilkins, so it appears to be the same person. If Albert's father (as per his marriage cert) is Samuel, this would appear to confirm the above as Samuel was father of the Albert mentioned above in the 1891 census Philip ----- Original Message ----- From: "talktalk" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 8:56 PM Subject: [ENG-HANTS] Albert Wilkins > Hi Listers > > Looking for some info on the birth of ALBERT WILKINS. > > l know that he was born 1875 approx: cause he was married in 1895 age 20. > He married LAURA BULL she was the same age, l have her birth as 1875 at > Oxford where both of them seem to be from. > > Any help would be welcome. > > Ann-Leeds > > > ............................................. > Want to contact the local community? > Please visit Hampshire Parish Jottings > http://hants.parishjottings.org.uk > ............................................. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [ENG-HANTS] Baptism's Southampton
    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. Carole, A few of points you might consider... First the age given in 1841 census was generally rounded down to the nearest five years. So if your Robert was stated as being 30 in the 1841 census - he could have been any age from 30 to 34. Secondly, if in the 1851 census he states he was born in Portsea, then why are you looking for a baptism in the Southampton area? Your first searches should be conducted in the parish registers of Portsea. If Robert was illegitimate, then he could have been a child of Sophia, and he just adopted the surname YELF when his mother married. Hope this helps Sandra Carole Cumber wrote: >Dear Listers . >I am still trying to find a baptism after 1807 but before 1813 for Robert YELF son of Robert and Sophia YELF. If there's no father's name on the marriage certificate, you need to check birth details. Since Robert was born ca 1811, that will be PR's. Specifically, baptismal records. If there's no father there, you might find him listed as base born, natural, or one of many other euphemisms for an illegitimate child. If you're lucky, that might have been a bastardy order against the putative father. > Should I assume that because he was with Robert and Sophia in 1841 > that this is the case??? If anyone else has ever run into this same Certainly not. He /could/ be Robert's father, but equally, he might not be. Remember the old adage; A mother is matter of fact. A father is a matter of faith. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" No guarantee the stimuli must be perceived the same... 1. [ENG-HANTS] Militia Competitive Examination
    2. Peter Gawn
    3. In 1875 Burney's Academy at Gosport was providing courses for "young men in the militia cramming for the Militia Competitive examination to enter the regular army". I assume, given Burney's normal student body, that these were officer candidates. I also assume that this examination and consequent possible admission to the regular army was part of the administrative reforms introduced following the Crimean War, which included the abolition of the purchasing of commissions. I've searched the web looking for enlightenment without scoring a hit. Anyone happen to know anything about this examination procedure? Thanks Peter Gawn. Sechelt, B.C., Canada.
