    3. Sandra You're correct. Cordwainers worked primarily with Cordovan Spanish leather and produced not only shoes but other objects from Cordovan leather, such as leather bottles. However, over time the term became synonymous with shoemaking in general. 3. You question on Shoe and Boot makers reminded me of this David as a Corwainer was a shoemaker [not bootmaker] who made shoes out of new Cordovan Spanish Leather while a cobbler cobbled shoes from USED leather! Chris "Joe he was a young cordwangler, Monging greebles did he go; And he loved a bogler's daughter By the name of Chiswick Flo. Vain she was and like a grusset, And her gander-parts were fine; But she sneered at Joe's cordwangle As it hung upon the line. So he stole a woggler's moolie For to make a wedding-ring, But the Bow Street Runners caught him And the judge said 'You will swing!' Oh, they hung him by the postern, Nailed his moolies to the fence - For to warn all young cordwanglers That it was a grave offence. There's a moral to this story, Though your gander-parts be poor - Keep your hands off others' moolies, For it is against the Law. __________________

    2. Trevor Tomasin
    3. Hi As a boy during the 1940/50s, growing up in Ryde, I spent a lot of time on Ryde Pier. I remember there being a large hut on the left hand side of the pier head (as you walked seaward) painted white and bearing a sign 'HM Customs & Excise' either to the side of or above the door. I am now, 50 years or so later, in the process of constructing a web site - www.hm-waterguard.org.uk - about the uniformed service of HM Customs & Excise and would like to hear from anyone who has information about the Customs & Excise hut on Ryde Pier - when it was constructed, when it was taken out of use, what it was used for, how it was staffed etc, and it's relationship to the Customs Offices in Cowes, Portsmouth Harbour and Southampton Dock. I would also like to hear from anybody who has ancestors who were employed prior to 1972, as Customs Officers in Ryde, in other parts of the Island or even on the mainland! Depending on the dates of the Officers employment he could have been described as either a Coastguard, a Boatman, a Preventive Officer (or Assistant Preventive Officer), a Surveyor, a Tide Waiter, a Waterguard Officer or a Customs Officer. Good Huntin' ;-) Trevor Tomasin Primarily researching - BANTON - BULL - COLLIS - LEAVERS - HOPKINS - MOODY - PURCHASE - TOMASIN - VINCENT - but always with an interest in derivatives, spouses and their siblings - and all part of 'The TOMASIN Family History Project' - www.tomasin.org.uk/genealogy Were your ancestors, or are your living relatives even, Customs Officers? Then visit the HM Waterguard web site - www.hm-waterguard.org.uk This e-mail, and any attachments to it, have been automatically checked for 'nasties' by Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm 6.

    3. Hi Sandra Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a look at the PRT website, and at Parish Chest. I could buy the full set for £25 or just those CDs that feature the IOW (there are 6, and they'd probably cost about £25 anyway). The problem I have is that I have no idea which parish John was born in, and I've only got the census records to say that he was born on the IOW. Perhaps someone has a lookup service. I'll wait a few days to see what other responses I get, and then consider these CDs. Thanks for your input.
