When you see the inside of some of these cottages you would be surprised how thick the walls are Some are about three feet thick and most of them are constructed out of basic wattle and daub etc. Chris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia O'Shea" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2007 3:35 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-HANTS] Village website updates - Longstock When I was in Dorset in 2005 there were thatchers working in the village - most interesting to watch. 3. Cheers David I thought Hooves was right and then found a lot of the websites had rooves but there was another one which I forgot the URL to which said Roofs! But I have just found it at http://www.usingenglish.com/quizzes/answers.php?id=356 but as you say either can be used. As I said the English language is confusing enough for us English let alone people from overseas!! See the Oxford English Dictionary and Eric Partridge's "Usage and abusage". Whatever your preferred spelling, most people pronounce it rooves so why no spell it so? 3. Ah, you make me homesick (odd concept for a person not born there!) - can't wait to be back to look around again. I was most impressed with the thatched roofs (rooves?) - photographs don't do justice to the sheer size and bulk of these. I was surprised at just how dominant they are in relation to the houses. Thanks for all the great posts and local information.
