    1. Re:] BMD record database to transfer to India
    2. Kindly forwarded by Edna. So thanks Edna. Linda and Tony In a message dated 23/06/05 16:24:38 GMT Daylight Time, ekbrit@rogers.com writes: A controversial deal will be signed in two weeks time to transfer the database containing all BMD's since 1837 from the ONS to India. Registers will be scanned in England and Wales and then transferred using an encrypted link to Madras, India, where the new digital database will be administered. This is happening despite protests from MP's peers and Trade Unions. Some MP's have signed an early day motion tabled by John McDonnell, labour MP for Hayes and Harlington asking that the transfer be stopped. The Public and Commercial Services union is also launching a campaign to prevent the event.

    3. Thank you Edna for forwarding this information I don't think any information has filtered through regarding this proposal here in Australia. What exactly is going to happen - how will you/or will you still be able to access records through ONS ? We have many instances where call centres, warranty details, etc. have been tranferred to India - including a payroll which my daughter-in-law used to handle for a major company - result she was made redundant. I would have thought the 1901 census would have been enough to make a governent rethink. Please keep us informed - Pamela P.S. The comments about ancestors and rain - please ask them to come south - we are still in the grips of the worst drought ever. Goulburn has no water - receivedf 16 mm and thought all their Christmases had come at once.

    3. Hi, Think what they are doing is putting it in another format for easy access for all, not actually keeping the records there in foreign lands. The problem I see is that British people over the years have had trouble transcribing correctly names and towns so would foreigners do any better?
