Good morning, My g.g.f's records shows an entry "Whitehall for medal 15.5.89". I cannot find anything amongst his records to indicate he was to be awarded a medal, Would anyone have any idea where I might be able to find out what would be the reason for receiving a medal and what type of medal it was, please? Regards, Joan. Sydney.
Hi Joan Depends what sort of medal - possibly the London Gazette. At the present time this is only on-line for WWI and WWII at: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/index.asp?webType=0 but ISTR reading that it is intended to put the 19th century content of this government newspaper on-line idc, ie I don't think they gave a date for the publication of this material. A little difficult for you in Oz, but you might also find that the local newspapers might have covered the award, and might give a little more detail with respect to the reason for the award - the London Gazette can be a little bland and may give no details apart from the fact that it was awarded. If, however, he was in the armed forces and this was merely for the award of service campaign medals or for the Long Service and Good Conduct medal, then you may need to research his service career. Medals were also awarded by other organisations, such as the Humane Society, for lifesaving, and by Church bodies etc., but I wouldn't have thought that that would warrant a visit to Whitehall ?
